At Community Nursing Home Volunteers super! by Margaret Rowland Over 50 volunteers at the Com- munity Nursing Home do everything they can to make each day brighter for the residents there. Kim Mitchell is the Activity Director who makes sure that so- nieone is there to supervise different activities. '"The volunteers are just super!" she says. The volunteers do everything from baking or selling tickets for bazaars to working at a steady posi- tion. Some do dishes or laundry while others visit or read to residents. As volunteers rotate through dif- ferent jobs Mrs. Mitchell says, "they can see another side of a resident." One woman plays the piano at supper and another leads exercises. There is a volunteer who teaches weaving and yet another teaches oil painting. Every two weeks someone brings books from the library. There is a Gardening Club, Bingo, and a Card Club which sends cards to residents on special occasions. The door prize, a beautiful hanging plant donated by Port Perry IGA was won by Shirley Love. The mon- thly competition was won by Lisa Ryan, 2nd Shirley Love who won a nice set of salt and pepper shakers donated by Lukes Country Store, 3rd prize was won by Alice Dodd. The next meeting will be a pot- luck supper. Entertainment will be | provided by the Pine Ridge Clog- gers. This will also be our last meeting for the season and election of officers will also take place. The Junior Garden Club is going quite strong and they and their families are invited to attend. At the last meeting they were given in- structions for making a pine cone creature, which will be Judged at this meeting. LETCHER Marjorie Letcher passed away quietly at the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry, on November 14, 1986. Marjorie was born in Bay City, Michigan on December 17, 1889 and at the age of three, moved to Port Perry with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Samuel James Mellow. After nursing one year in Toronto, subse- quent to obtaining her R.N. with honours at the Roosevelt Hospital in New York, Marjorie married William Merlin Letcher in 1917 and moved to Mary Street for her entire life. Marjorie was a concerned ° member of the United Church and an active member of the Indepen- dent Order of the Daughters of the Empire. Twenty years ago, Mar- jorie sustained a massive stroke, spending the rest of her life in the Community Nursing Home. Funeral Service was held at the Wagg-McDermott-Panabaker Funeral Home, Port Perry, on Mon- day, November 14, 1986 with inter- ment at Pine Grove Cemetery.
