Murray Archibald has been hired by Crandell's Tavern to drive patrons safely home in a seven passenger van. The service, free of charge, will go into effect in December on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. A similar service offc ed by the local restaurant ~ last year did not catch on with patrons, but the management hopes that will change this year. The management at Crandell's Restaurant and Tavern in Port Perry is hoping that the offer of a free ride home will catch on with customers next month. Starting December 4 on Thurs- day, Friday and Saturday evenings, Crandell's will be offering its customers free rides home to anywhere in Scugog Township. Crandell's bar manager Judy Col- lins told the Star last week the tavern attempted a similar service last December, but it didn't go over with customers. "I don't think people last year realized the full impact of the drink- ing and driving laws. There has been a real crack-down,"' she said. She noted that even a first convic- tion for impaired driving these days carries a heavy fine, loss of licence for up to a year and increased car insurance premiums, For these reasons, plus the fact that there is no public transporta- tion in Scugog Township and Crandell's does not want to see their customers drink and drive, Ms. Col- lins is hoping the van service idea takes off next month. The restaurant already has pur- chased a Ford Van, which will carry seven passengers in comfort, and Murray Archibald has been hired as the driver. Ms. Collins told the Star the van service will start the night of December 4th, and be available to customers from 11:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. She said that once the bar closes at 1:00 a.m., customers who want to wait for the van will be allowed to stay in the tavern and coffee will be available, "We won't make anyone stand outside in the cold parking lot to wait for the van," she emphasized. She said she hopes that if groups of people know the service is there, they will come to the restaurant by cab as a group and then take the van to their homes. She said she hopes customers won't just take the van to a friend's house, then get in their cars and drive the rest of the way home. While the service will be limited to Scugog Township, Ms. Collins said it will be extended to Uxbridge, especially if a group from that com- DURIAM AUTOMOBILES LIED. 1250 DUNDAS ST. The tavern will not be charging customers for use of this service, but Ms. Collins feels the expenses are worth it for the obvious reasons of keeping people out of their cars after they've been drinking, and from a public relations aspect. She admits there probably will be snags initially in getting the service off the ground, but she hopes the customers will be patient "until we get the bugs ironed out." The plans at this time are to offer the service for the month of December, but Ms. Collins said if it is widely accepted, the manage- ment will seriously consider keep- ing it permanently. She is confident that the service will be accepted this year. "They know they can't go out and have a good time, have a few drinks, and then get in their cars. This is for their own safety. It's as simple as that," she stated.
