Auctioneers rally for the Consolation trophy To start off an action packed weekend of hockey the J.P. Pearce Auctioneers faced a Friday night against Cobourg. This match was a real nail biter as Jay Tredway open- ed up the scoring for Port with only 6 seconds gone on the clock on a great pass from defenseman Matt Morris. As the 1st period ended Cobourg was on top 2-1. Port's Sandy Mark tied up the game on a fabulous rush up the ice after picking up a rink wide pass from defenseman Greg Thompson. Cobourg then scored 2 unanswered goals to end the period on top 4-2. As the 3rd period began Billy Zaparanuik scored to close the gap 4-3. As he picked up the rebound and blasted it home with fellow-lineman Jay Tredway picking up the assist. All the boys had some outstanding chances but just couldn't seem to beat the Cobourg net minder. With less than 2 minutes to go in the game, Cobourg netted 3 unanswered goals ending the game - Port down 7-4. On Saturday the Novice No. 1's travelled to Ennismore for their 1st tournament of the season. Port Perry's 1st opponents were the Pickering Panthers. Picking to a 4-0 lead early in the game but Port battled back and their hard work started to pay off midway through the second period. Jeremy Geer started Port off as he blasted one between the pipes from a super pass by Kenton LeFort. Two minutes later Port moved ahead as the hard working Billy Zaparanuik netted goal No. 2 assisted by Greg Thompson. With Curling by Scott Howey Good luck to the team of Dan Rankin, Gord Lee, Chris Moore and John Rankin who will be represen- ting Port Perry at the Pepsi Junior Men's competition being held at the Oshawa Curling Club this coming Saturday and Sunday. Entries for the Labatt Tankard closed last weekend with a record of six teams having signed up. Club playdowns for the Labatt Tankard get underway on December 13 and 14 at the club. TSN *'The Sports Network' has put together an event being called The Curling Skins Game with total prize money of $30,000. There are only 1 second remaining on the clock Kenton LeFort raced through the defense and tallied Port's 3rd goal of the game ending the period 4-3. No one could ask for a team to try harder than Port Perry as they con- tinued to challenge the Pickering goalie. Kenton LeFort, Jay Tred- way, Ryan Williams and Billy Zaparanuik all had great breakaway chances but were robb- ed by the Pickering goalie. Port's goaltenders Brandon Hammond and Scot Prechitko played great stand- up hockey throughout the game. Way to work boys! At the close of every game a most valuable player (M.V.P.) medallion was awarded to each team and pick- ing it up for Port was the very hard working Kenton LeFort. Con- gratulations Kenton! This loss meant Port would con- tinue to climb the ladder up the con- solation side and would resume play Sunday morning at 8 a.m. With the fans a little blurry-eyed but definitely not the players, the J.P. Pearce Auctioneers accompanied by their new mascot (lovingly made by Jennifer Geer and Laurie Thompson) bounded on the ice to face off against St. Johns. Port Perry started to fly as defenseman Jay King raced up the ice and with his powerful shot put Port on the scoreboard, assisted by Kenton LeFort and Jeremy Geer.. With merely 30 seconds gone in the 2nd period Jay Tredway displayed some super stick handling maneuvers as he put Port up 2-0. Billy Zaparanuik advanced Port's orner only four teams compeung but they are none other than the Briar and Silver Broom winning rinks of Ed Werenick, Al Hackner, Ed Lacowich and Rick Folk. This event takes place December 3 and 4 at the Newmarket Recreation Complex. Tickets are $10 per night with fur- ther information available by call- ing 853-1596 or 898-2155. Action starts at 3:00 and those interested can sign up at the club lead as he was perfectly set up by Jeremy Geer & Jay Tredway. Nice passing boys! St. Johns came back to score 2 squeeker goals but Billy once again turned on the gas and blasted another one home assisted by San- dy Mark. To end the 2nd period Jeremy Geer beat the St. Johns goalie to put Port ahead 5-2. As the 3rd period began Sandy Mark's great effort paid off as he netted a beautiful goal assisted by Jeremy Geer & Jay Tredway. Then with 1 minute left on the clock, Port's Kenton LeFort put one upstairs with Billy Zaparanuik & Jay King picking up the assists. St. John's went on to score 2 more in a loosing effort. As the game ended Port on top 7-4. Way to hustle boys. Sandy Mark picked up Port's M.V.P. of the game. Well earned Sandy! With this win the scene was set for the consolation play off game against Lakefield. After an arousing pep-talk by Coach Spencely, the Novice No. 1 flew out onto the ice all fired up for the win. Port Perry broke out of their shell as they played fabulous positional hockey, passing and shooting like old pros. The offensive lines con- tinuously pounded their opponents net and the defensive lines played exceptionally well refusing to let Lakefield penetrate our zone. Port Perry skated to a 9-2 victory over Lakefield with Jay Tredway & Sandy Mark both netting 3 goals and 1 assist, Timmy Fitzpatrick 2 goals, Jeremy Geer 1 goal and 1 assist, Tommy Chambers 1 goal and Ken- ton LeFort, Greg Thompson and Gavin Carnegie each picking up assists. The M.V.P. for this game went to Jay King who played a spectacular game on defense as well as making several great offensive rushes. Way to work Jay! Wingman Ryan Williams played super hockey this weekend as he muscled in along the boards and never stopped working - way to go Ryan - you are doing great. Matt Morris made some super moves on defense as he continued to frustrate the Lakefield offense. Way to work Matt! The Novice No. 1 deserved to win this consolation trophy and have proved to themselves what a great team they really are! You should be proud of yourselves, vou are all MVP's Port's next game is Friday night at home against Stouffville at 7 p m. A, TRE TERR BTN TTT a Pee Wees in two close ones On Friday, November 14, Port Perry Pee Wee A's Legion team hosted Cobourg in a fast hard hitting game. In the first period we managed to out shoot Cobourg 11-7, however, neither team found the mark. In the second period, which seems to be our problem period, Cobourg out shot us 11-5 and also managed to slip a shot past goalie Brian Madill. In the 3rd period Cobourg really went on the attack and put 2 goals past goalie Shawn Larocque. However, Cobourg"s aggressive play seemed to spark our players and Jan Heyes put us on the score board on a nice passing play from Jason Cochrane and Brett Puckrin. Then, with a little over a minute left in the game we pulled our goalie and with six attackers Mark Andrews found the mark on a pass from Steve Laird. Final score: Cobourg 3, Port 2 and a nice recovery from last weekend. In the final period we out shot Cobourg 10 to 7. On Saturday the Legion team travelled to Oshawa to play the Red Wings. Unfortunately Chris Forder suf- fered a knee injury after only 6 seconds of play. Chris's parents took him to Oshawa General and Chris doesn't have any broken bones but will have a very sore knee for a while. We all wish Chris a speedy recovery. In the first period the Red Wings scored 2 goals and out shot us 9 to 8. In the second period Steve Laird found the mark on a nice setup by Mark Andrews and Jody Logan. This goal was hardly on the board befor. Port found the mark again on some nice passing by Jason Towns and Jody Logan to John Collins then to Mark Andrews who blasted it home to even up the game. Oshawa scored again before the period end- ed. The Red Wings again out shot us 16 to-6 in this period which shows what a great job our goalies Brian and Shawn are doing. The score remained 3-2 in the thrid period and with 59 seconds re- maining our goalie was pulled and once again 419 came through when "Steve Laird picked up a pass from Jan Heyes with only 21 seconds left and put it past the Oshawa goalie to give us a tie. We out shot Oshawa in the third period 11 to 6. Our next game is against Oshawa on Friday night at Scugog Arena. On Saturday the team will travel to Wasaga Beach for their first tourna- ment of the season. Good Luck Pee Wees.
