If the Fair Grounds site does become available by the middle of this month, the Board of Education wor'ld start construction of a school in the wate fall of 1987 for opening by September the following year. If not, the school "will face further delays. The Fair Board met last week and 'each group presented proposals that it would want to see at a new site behind the Arena. However, when the lists were discussed by the council Monday afternoon, it became apparent that members of council are losing patience.with the entire process. "We don't even know what the official Fair Board position (on a move) is at this time," said coun- cillor Lawrence Malcolm. He was referring to a written suggestion from Fair Board vice chairman Doug Coates who suggest that the Township spend money to up-grade the existing Fairgrounds, and if that is not possible a new site (other than Board of Education that we can't possibly meet the deadlines for the new school site and a new school just can't go on that site in 1988," he stated. It was at this point that coun- cillor Cochrane suggest the Fair behind the Arena) should be found for the Fair. At one point during Monday's meeting, councillor Neil McLaughlin suggested the whole issue should be "We (council) should just inform the « Get involved with park associate meet Seagrave and Area News by Diane Cooke Get involved! Young children must be made aware of the evils of illegal drugs and the evils of abuse of legal drugs like alcohol. But youngsters should also learn that justice must be fair and must "fit the crime," so to speak. Our Charter of Rights and Freedoms does state quite clearly that 'everyone has the right not to be subjected to cruel and unusual treatment or punishment." I would also like to think that youngsters should grow up with a sense that society (including employers, maybe even the CFL and the NHL) has within reasonable limits, a sense of tolerance for individuals who do make one mistake. Most people, again, within reasonable limits, are entitled to one mistake and a se- cond chance. In this context, I can't help but think of Don Mur- doch, a very promising young NHL player, who was con- victed of a minor drug offense several years ago. He was slapped with a lengthy suspension by the league as well. He sat it out, tired to make a come-back, but never did, and drifted into hockey obscurity. He made a mistake and paid a very dear price for it. Likewise with Mr. Pothier of the Eskimos. Most people in Canada had probably never heard of Hector Pothier before last week. Offensive linemen in the CFL tend to toil in obscurity. And most people will probably never hear of him again. But I think he got dealt a bad hand of cards home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hamer of Myrtle. Mr. Jamieson said he believes many Fair Board members are prepared to move to a new site behind Scugog Arena, if the Town- ship agrees to pay for the move and new facilities, including a race track. Council members did pot disclose publicly how much they are prepared to offer the Fair Board in a cash buy-out of the lease. Board members might be willing to discuss and negotiate a buy-out of their lease. oo "It is my feeling that this is now the only way to go," he stated to council. However, current Fair Board president Jim Jamieson told the Star later Monday evening that the buy-out proposal is a surprise to him. He said this has not been discussed at Fair Board meetings. Mr. Jamieson questioned whether the Township council can come up with enough cash to allow the Fair Board to buy a piece of "ALL YOU CAN EAT" - Every Wednesday 5 to 8 P.M. 7' BBQ Side Ribs & Chicken ' $ roca sansa $8 (0) CONWAY PLACE *rwar mma HWY. 7A (by the Causeway) -- 985-7631 *Jewellery Repairs on Premises ! | *CUSTOM-MADE JEWELLERY *Goldsmith on Staff 2%, TAN AIP pms hepins 197 Queen Street, Port Perry - 985-8263 ; rere Bb one AN \ DURKAM AUTOMOBILES LTD. 1250 DUNDAS ST.
