McClelland In what was probably the best Junior C hockey game at the Scugog Arena in several years, the Port Perry MoJacks defeated the Ux- bridge Bruins 5-2 in front of a large crowd Sunday evening. The win vaulted the MoJacks in- to first place in the Crawley Division of the Central Junior League, one point ahead of Uxbridge, who suf- fered their first defeat so far this season. MoJacks now have 12 points on six wins and two defeats, while the Bruins, with a game in hand have 11 points on five wins, one tie and one loss. . If Sunday night's game is any in- dication of the rivalry between Port Perry and Uxbridge, Junior C fans in both towns are going to see some fine hockey as the Bruins and Mo- 4 _ Jacks will meet several more times before playoffs roll around. For the MoJacks, Darren Nesbitt led the scoring with a pair of goals, while Mark McVety, Bob St. Jules and Chris Nicholson had single markers. Todd Williamson and Kevin Smith replied for the Bruins, both goals coming in a span of 22 seconds mid-way through the final period. But the outstanding MoJacks on the ice in this one was n¢*minder Brian Tarleton who fo.ied his former team-mates on numerous tough scoring chances. Tarleton, who played for the Bruins last season, was especially sharp in the first ten minutes of the game as the Bruins left the gates flying and buzzed around in the Mo- Jacks end of the rink. Tarleton made a couple of excellent glove- hand stops and were it not for his fine play the Bruins might have scored a couple of early goals and changed the entire complexion of the game. As it was, the opening stanza re- mained scoreless and it was just 2:33 into the second when McVety gave the MoJacks a 1-0 lead. The goal came off a scramble in front of Bruin netminder Scott Irvine. Defenseman Darren Nesbitt got his first of the night at 4:10 when he rifled a hard shot from a very sharp angle. The puck went through a maze of players and just caught the net under the cross-bar. Brian Prak- ken picked the assist. At 16:17 with the teams at five aside, Nesbitt scored to make it 3-0. Dave Burnett executed a fine delay pass from beside the Bruin cage to Nesbitt who cruised through the slot and beat Irvine cleanly. Sean Bradley drew the other assist. Early in the third, MoJacks ap- peared to have a comfortable cushion as Bob St. Jules took passes from Rob Baker and McVety and slid a back-hand under the Bruin goalie who was down on the play. That it made it 4-0. But the Bruins, who showed a lot of hustle and good positional play in this game, refused to roll over and play dead. At 9:44, Todd Williamson ruined Tarleton's shut-out bid on a deflected shot through the pads. At 10:06, the Bruins were right back in the game when Kevin Smith fired a rising shot from the right side. Just when it appeared the Bruins were getting set for a charge to tie the score late in the period, MoJack winger Chris Nicholson took the wind from the visitors sails at 13:46. Nicholson gathered up passes from Clay Dempsey and Jim Lewis, stepped across the Uxbridge blue ~ line and let go a howitzer of a shot that was in the net before Joe Risk could make a move. Nicholson has "been firing the puck very hard for the MoJacks so far this season. He comes by this ability honestly as he's the younger brother of Brian "Joe" Nicholson who starred with the MoJacks for two seasons and gave Junior C goalies fits with his slap shot. That gave the MoJacks a three- goal lead once again and they played it close to the vest the rest of the game to preserve the win. Tarleton faced 28 shots in the game, many of them tough chances and he obviously was delighted to stone his former team. The Mo- Jacks directed 30 shots at the Bruin net. This was an exceptionally well played Junior game, very fast, hard hitting at times and almost com- pletely free of any chcap shots. In fact, the MoJacks took seven minor penalties and the Bruins were call- ed for eight, an indication that both teams were sticking to hockey. For the MoJacks, it was the se- cond win in as many nights as the team travelled to Madoc Saturday evening for a match with the Hur- ricanes, one of the new entries in the Central Loop this year. The Hur- ricanes didn't have much puff in their attack as the MoJacks skated to a 9-3 victory. Rob Phinney clicked for a pair of goals as did defensemen Rick Wilson, one of the smoothest skaters on the team. Singles came from Rob Baker, who also had three assists; Andy Sutch, Clay Dempsey, Jim Lewis and Mark McVety. McVety added a couple of assists to go with his goal and he's proving' to have a deft scoring touch with the puck. Brian Tarleton went most of the distance in the net for the Mo- Jacks with Stacey Ballingall getting a taste of Junior C shooters in the third period. MoJacks took just seven minors in this one, while Madoc took six. Last Tuesday night, the MoJacks went into Ajax to face the un- defeated Axemen and came out on the short end of 6-4 score. Ajax Tweens triumph 12-3 The Allen Aluminum Tweens cer- tainly started the year on the right foot with their 12-3 victory over Warkworth. Congratulations to Nicki Beare who played a good game between the pipes and to all of the girls who's good passing game was reflected by the score. Scoring for Port Perry were Nicole Slack 5 goals and 1 assist, Lisa Levy 4 goals, Denna Lovering, Heather Lawrence and Christine Mueller each had 1 goal, Sylvia Dur- ward had 3 assists and Kelly Men- zies 1 assist. Lisa Toye and Danielle Cooper also played a good game. We thank Denna Lovering and Kelly Menzies who came up from Petites to help us out and we look forward to our next game in Lind- say on Sunday at 5 p.m. where our two new players, Laurel Menzies and Terry Bell will make their debut. Good luck girls! caught the MoJacks napping in the first period with three straight goals before Mark McVety found the range for Port Perry. Ajax added one more late in the frame to take a 4-1 lead into the dressing room. In the second period, the MoJacks | dominated play and outshot the Ax- emen 14-8. Mike Watters and Chris Nicholson scored to narrow the lead to 4-3, but Ajax countered with one late in the period. The teams traded goals in the final frame with St. Jules scoring for - Junior C fans were treated to a fine display of fast, tough, but clean hockey Sunday night at the Scugog Arena as the Port Perry MoJacks and Uxbridge Bruins battled for first place in the Crawley Division. Scoring chances like the one above with Chris Nicholson trying to poke the The stage was set for the J.P. Pearce Auctioneers Saturday night as they skillfully beat the Port Hope Panthers for their first win of the regular season. After a quick sweater change the Novice No. 1's came out all fired up and ready to win. Jeremy Geer opened up the scor- ing as he picked up a rebound shot and tipped it past the Port Hope goaltender putting Port on the scoreboard. Less than 2 minutes later centerman Jay Tredway pick- ed up a perfect pass from winger Tommy Chambers and raced through the Port Hope defence blasting it between the pipes to put Port ahead 2-0. Nice team work boys! The second period saw Sandy Mark explode with 2 spectacular goals, the 1st being unassisted and the second off a well executed pass by wingman Timmy Fitzpatrick. Although Port received several minor penalties Port Hope just couldn't seem to beat the goalten- ding duo of Scot Prechitko and Brandon Hammond who made some dazzling saves. Great work! Nearing the end of the 3rd period Jay Tredway rocketted in his se- cond of the night assisted by a very hard working Jeremy Geer. With 3 PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, November 4, 1986 -- 27 the MoJacks and the game ended 6-4 in the Axemen favour. After four games in seven nights this past week, the MoJacks will en-, joy a week's rest as their next en- counter is this coming Sunday (Navember 9) at the Scugog Arena against host the Brighton Bruins. This team has been struggling in the early going of the Junior C season (MoJacks defeated the Bruins 16-0) so the players may feel they have something to prove. While the MoJacks appear to be ~- . seconds remaining, Port Hope slip- ped in their lone goal of the night en- ding the game with Port on top 5-1. Saturday's game was an excep- tionally well played, exciting game ~of end to end hockey, due in a large part to Bob Spencley, Ken Parry and Murray Empringham who have MoJacks vault over Bruins intofirst coming together as a unit under coaches George Burnett and Ed Olsen, one aspect of their games to date that is also very pleasing is the number of penalties. The team has not taken a five-minute major since the first game of the season in Port Hope on October 9. The players have been sticking to hockey, and for the most part, have been avoiding those "'stupid" trips to the box. Game time this Sunday night at the Scugog Arena is 7:30 when the Brighton Bruins are the visitors. loose puck over the line were pretty common in this game. When the dust had settled MoJacks were ahead 5-2 to hand Bruins their first defeat of the season, and take a one point lead over Ux- ~ bridge in the standings. (See story for details on the game and other MoJack action this week First for the Auctioneers worked so hard with the boys. With this win under their belts the J.P. Pearce Auctioneers will be ready to face off against Lindsay on Friday, November 7 at Scugog Arena. Just keep on trying boys because you can do it! See you Friday. Atom B's nipped On Saturday, November 1, the Pineridge Atoms travelled to Darl- ington Arena to play Bowmanville. The home team applied steady pressure throughout the first two periods, but great goaltending by Steven Stiles kept Port in the game. Bowmanville opened the scoring with 1:04 left in the second period. The Pineridge team fought back with 2 quick goals in the third period. The first goal was scored by Todd Smart from Misty Andrews and Robin Prentice and the second by Dave Bourgeois unassisted. The Bowmanville team still ap- plying steady pressure scored to tie the game but Brent Harper with some great stick handling gave Port the lead with his goal and Brett Lawson drew the assist. With five minutes remaining in the third period, Bowmanville scored twice to take a 4-3 lead. The Pineridge team gave a great effort and with their goalie pulled for an extra attacker came close twice but could not tie it up. This very interesting game featured some great forechecking by Jeff Card, fine second effort by Misty Andrews and good goalten- ding by Steven Gilbert and Steven Stiles. The Pineridge Atoms next home games are on Friday, November 7 at 8:00 against Newcastle and on Saturday, November 8 at 7:30 against Omemee. P.S. In last weeks write up, Simon Traynor's name was inadvertently omitted from (e teams roster. Sorry Simon! 1)
