CALL 985-7383 for INFORMATION NDP says waste fighters have won Tyrone battle Citizen groups fighting the government's waste dump policy have won the battle of Tyrone, not the war, say local New Democrats. "When the government announc- ed on October 10th that no low-level radioactive waste dump would be put in the Tyrone area, it left the problem still hanging over our heads' says NDP riding president Wilf Day after an executive meeting at his Port Hope home recently "The federal government is con- tradicting itself For four years they have been trying to sell Eldorado. telling it to cut costs and make a profit so it would sell." says Day "Now they say they'll get the "best minds in the world" to find the best possible way to store the 11 million tonnes ot historic wastes in Eldorado's Port Granby and Welcome dump sites. 'But still Eldorado must pay the cost. Wesleyville is still 'on stand- by' and is still the cheapest site. "This is the same government that promised to double Canada's spending on scientific research and development, then cut $20 million from the National Research Council "When asked why the govern ment didn't rule out Wesleyville the way it ruled out Tyrone. Gerald Merrithew simply said that Eldorado owns the land. as though it was already a private company "Thank God they failed to find a buyer for Eldorado, otherwise the Tyrone proposal would still be alive today" says Day. In a letter to the Minister of the Environment Sept. 30th, New Democrat leader Ed Broadbent called for "alternate sites which are environmentally and geographical- ly acceptable and distant from populated areas." "Local New Democrats say Amen to that" says Marg Wilbur of Port Perry, Secretary of the riding executive. "Now that residents have forced the government to back down, we must keep up the fight" says Wilbur "For a start, while they are looking for the best minds in the world for their new task force, they should include someone who actual- ly knows the problem we have here --- a local resident" Wilbur demands.
