The unbelievably heavy and constant rainfall is playing absolute havoc with farming operations as well as great difficulty to gardeners. Now this morning we hear talk about snow flurries -- surely not! Plans are being made for the opening of the Curling Season with an Instruction Fun Nighi for members of all leagues on Monday, October 20th, at 7 p.m. This evening is great for anyone to give the sport a try. Pine Ridge Sports will be pre- sent with a display of curling equip- ment and clothing. There are open- ings in all leagues still -- for Men's call John Churchill 986-5435; for Mixed call Dale and Janet Van Camp 986-0097 and Ladies Mary DeMarchant 986-5168. Please note the date of the Davidson Mixed Bonspiel has been changed to Satur- day, November 29. Recently several of our residents have travelled to the Eas Coast. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Luke accom- panied by Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lauridsen of Regina, Sask., toured the Eastern United States and Maritime Provinces. They report only one day of inclement weather on their trip. : Craig Larmer and Lawrence Van Camp also have recently returned home from a trip to the Maritimes and Eastern United States. Another un-named young couple enjoyed a romantic holiday to Moncton and Eastern United States. Albert and Kathleen Watts were recent Sunday evening dinner guests of Harry and Bertha McLaughlin. Last week, Lori Ann Emerton lost her car in an accident on her way to. { . Sheridan College, Oakville, where she is studying Computer Graphics. This week she was presented with Honours in Fine Arts at Guelph University. Maybe next week Lori will get a new car. Thankfully Lori was uninjured. Congratulations on your graduation. Melville. and Doris Samells, Bowmanville, took his mother Mrs. Ken Samells to visit her daughter and husband, Ann and Doug Powell at their new home near Cloyn last Sunday. Kathleen and Albert Watts spent a couple of days holidaying with her brother and his wife Irene and An- son Taylor at their Muskoka cottage near Gravenhurst. A notice is made of the Lioness Craft Sale 'and Flea Market on November 22. The proceeds will be put towards the purchase of a server for the Community Centre. A large group of Pathfinders and 1 Guides with their leaders enjoyed a wet weekend camping at the Moun- tjoy Ranch. The Pathfinders had a service team cooking. Many Guides and Pathfinders were tested over the weekend. Many new ideas were learned in cooking outdoors. The 1% girls went on hiking trails and nature studies. On October 9, our local Blackstock High School will be beginning a campaign selling Citrus Fruit. This iS your opportunity to support the young people of this area. October 16 will be Parent's Night when everyone in the community is welcome to come to see the man improvements to the High School. On Thursday the Senior students en- joyed their annual trip to Stratford to the Shakespearean Festival. On Sunday afternoon, the Blackstock Youth group accom- panied by leaders Rev. and Mrs. D. Davis enjoyed mini-golfing at Treasure Island on Simcoe Street, Oshawa. After supper at McDonald's, the group travelled home. Several from Blackstock attend- ed the annual Harvest Home Church Service at the Scugog Island Head Church at Scugog Shores Museum. Guest Minister was Rev. G. Jackson of Port Perry. The October meeting of the Blackstock W.I. was held in the Community Hall on Oct. 1, at 1 p.m. with Mrs. Flora Samells' group in charge, with the theme being Con- sumers Affairs. After singing the In- stitute Grace, pumpkin pie with whipped cream and grapes and tea were enjoyed. After a short social time, President Mrs. Roy McLaughlin read the poem "I Think I Can." The Institute Ode and Col- lect were repeated in unison. Secretary-treasurer Mrs. Pat Sleep read the minutes of the last meeting and then gave the treasurer's report. Mrs. May Shor- tridge made and brought two quilt blocks to be sent to Erland Lee Home. Plans were made to accept invitations to visit Maple Grove and Solina Institute and for those atten- ding the short course. Plans were made to bring baking and vegetables to the Fun Fair on Oct. 22 -- an afternoon of fun and tea held in Solina Hall. Our own meeting for Nov. 5 will be an evening with a special speaker on Family Lawl. Visitors will be welcomed. The delegate for the annual convention in Toronto will be Mrs. Roy McLaughlin. The Roll Call "Name a source of Calcium' was well answered. The Motto -- Do not complain about growing old -- many are denied that privilege was commented on by Mrs. Samells. Mrs. Sleep had a very interesting programme. With the use of a chart she gave a wealth of information on Osteoporous which starts without warning. If a woman doesn't have enough calcium in her diet, this disease causes the bones to get brit- tle or porous. It can cripple or cause falls. she had a list of ways to safe proof our homes and gave out literature on the subject. The meeting closed with the Lord's Prayer. Better health is wished for Mrs. Norman Smith and E.R. Trewin who are in Port Perry Hospital and to Mrs. E. Toms in Oshawa Hospital.
