See story for details. ry a DI NAAR FA 5 BH 0 Roselyn Oliver relaxes on one of the two tanning beds at Port Perry's newest Queen Street business, the Gold 'n Glow. P.M.S. WORKSHOP 4 presented by Durham Health Unit | Tuesday, September 23 ... 1:30 p.m. | a Scugog Public Library | Jogi | Admission: $2.00 - Tickets available at the Library. There's nothing that sets off a good piece of jewellry better than a . great tan. And now, at Port Perry's newest Queen Street business, customers can have both. Fine jewellry. A deep tan. Even in the middle of February. Partners Kerry Sculley and Roselyn Oliver officially opened Gold 'n Glow last Saturday, September 20th, in the building previously occupied by Sears. Gold 'n Glow is unique in Scugog Township because it is the only place around where people can go on a regular basis to get a tan. That's the '"'glow" part. The "gold" part makes the new . © store unique almost anywhere. Because of the two women's background in the jewellry business (they worked for a long time in the same local jewellry store), they in- corporated several lines of state of the art jewellry along with the tan- ning booths. Jewellry and tanning seemed a natural combination to Kerry and Roselyn ever since they started thinking about it ages ago. Both women are members of a gym where they use the tanning booths on a regular basis, and both women are professionals in the jewellry department. After tossing the idea around for months, they finally decided to try their luck last June. "We just decided it was time to do it," Roselyn said. The store offers two beds in two PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 23, 1986 -- 15 Gold 'n Glow sets a new precedent separate, private rooms, designed to accommodate people who don't want bjkini lines to ruin their tans. And with the special "safe" bulbs in the beds, there is virtually no risk of burning. Kerry says the beds provide the same basic type of tanning rays as the sun does, with a few differences. Mainly, the harmful rays of the sun are eliminated. The sun contains three distinct bands of ultraviolet light -- U.V.A., U.V.B,, and U.V.C. U.V.A. rays provide long wave ultraviolet light that is gentle, yet has the ability to darken color pig- ment in the skin to create a tan. A tan is your body's natural defence mechanism against the harsh mid range ultraviolet rays of the sun. U.V.B. rays provide mid range ultraviolet light that has 500 times the energy quantum of U.V.A. This increased energy can cause the dry- ing, burning and other da.naging ef- fects to unprotected skin. U.V.C. rays are short wave ultraviolet -- the most dangerous rays of the sun. Fortunately, this range is almost completely absorb- ed in the ozone layer in the stratosphere and only a small amount of it reaches the earth. The tanning beds at Gold 'n Glow, with Sunstream Bronzarium Bulbs, put the U.V.A. rays to the most work, with about one third of one percent U.V.B. light. '"There's just enough U.V.B. rays to darken your tan. It won't burn," Kerry said. Well, it won't burn most people, Kerry qualifies. Some people will never tan. Those people, usually fair-skinned with fair hair, have too few "melanocyte'" cells in their bodies. And extreme example of this type of person is an albino. For most people, however, Kerry and Roselyn say 10 half hour visits will guarantee a good tan, if the visits are made within two weeks. After the initial two weeks, most people can retain their tan with a couple visits per week. A half hour session costs $8, but if 10 sessions are paid for in advance, the price comes down to $6 each. But even if you're one of those people who just won't tan, you'll still find a trip to Gold 'n Glow worthwhile. The shop contains a wide selection of exclusive jewellry, including a collection of silver by designer David Lake; some beautiful, unusual bronze jewellry from Greece; and a wide range of diamonds. Prices run the gamut from $8 for earrings to as high as customers want to go. In the future, Kerry, a goldsmith, will be designing her own jewellry as well as doing custom designs and orders. Both Kerry and Roselyn are ex- cited about the business and are looking forward to showing it off to people in the town, "Kids especially are really in- ' terested in the tanning," Roselyn said.
