Home tours Port Perry is now involved in a Sesquicentennial celebration. What is a sesquicentennial? It is a one hundred and fifty year celebration. 150 years ago, Peter Perry made his way from Napanee to Whitby. Whitby, of course, did not exist then. North-east Whitby, where he sett]- ed later became known as Perry's Corners. To commemorate this 150 year anniversary, Scugog Shores Historical Society is assisting the Architectural Conservancy of On- tario in providing a fascinating house tour. Homes in Whitby, Raglan, Prince Albert and Port Perry are featured. The Scugog area, particularly Port Perry is known nationally for its architectural beauty. The noted heritage architect, the late Napier Simpson said of Port Perry -- "There is more Victorian per square mile here, than anywhere else in Canada." Some of Port Perry's most notable examples of Victorian ar- chitecture have been selected for the tour: The Town Hall, The Bigelow House at 178 Cochrane now owned by the Solars; the Wilcox House across the road at 177 Cochrane, now owned by Bob and Pat Smith, Beechcroft, the old Sangster and later the Kent House on Lakeshore Drive owned now by the Kraupas and in Prince Albert, the McBrien house at 350 Simcoe Street owned by Delores Victor. Port Perry's Town Hall built in 1873 is a source of pride for the peo- ple of Scugog. Slated for demolition a few years ago, it was tastefully and accurately restored and is now a focal point for many community activities and has become a cultural centre recognized across the pro- vince. Inside, its beautiful wood- work and decor are enhanced by portraits of Joseph Bigelow and his wife. The Bigelow House, built for Joseph Bigelow in 1877, is recogniz- ed across Canada as one of the best remaining original examples of Italianate architecture. The opulence of this home reflects the success of its builder, Mr. Bigelow, who was Scugog's first Reeve, Post ~ Master, a Bank Manager, Store Manager, Mill and Factory owner, and later Justice of the Peace. Directly across Cochrane Street (Mr. Cochrane was Mr. Bigelow's lawyer), is thc house now owned by Bob and Pat Smith who are patient- ly restoring it to its Victorian splen- dor. It is one of the few remaining original examples of Mansard roof- ed buildings. "Beechcroft" is the focal point of the present "Kent Estates." The Kent Italian gardens was a famous tourist centre in the 1920's. Thousands of people came to Port Perry by train to visit the elaborate floral and fountain displays which are now the grounds of the fine homes of Kent Estates. This rambl- ing house is now owned by Hans and Dianne Kraupa. Delores Victor is the proud owner of Prince Albert's finest home, built in 1855 and occupied by the McBrien family for many years. McBrien was a Public School inspector and friend of Egerton Ryerson, father of Ontario's Educational system. His son, James McBrien had a distinguished military career which spanned the Boer War and World War I. He climaxed his career with a Knighthood and served as head of the R.C.M.P. All of these houses will be open for viewing on Saturday, September 20th, as part of the Sesquicentennial House Tour. Tickets for the entire tour, including houses in Whitby and Raglan are available at Irwin Smith's and from Joan Scott and Paul Arculus of the Historical Society.
