Council rejects Caesarea re-zoning A re-zoning application for a boat repair business just east of Caesarea was turned down by Scugog Township council September 8. The application was mad Jy Fred Thomas who has been repair- ing boats and small engines on the property for the past three years. The zoning application was to change the designation from rural to rural exception. Prior to rejecting the application at the meeting September 8, Ward 4 councillor Neil McLaughlin said in his opinion the location 'is not a good one for boat repairs." And area councillor Harvey Graham said Mr. Thomas' attitude over the past couple of years has been "very irritating." "He (Mr. Thomas) hus done ex- actly the opposite of what council as asked him to do," stated councillor Graham. Two weeks ago at a public hear- ing in the council chambers into the re-zoning application, several residents of Caesarea spoke against the proposal, calling the property an "eyesore." Mr. Thomas has told the council that if the re-zoning was approved, he would build a double garage for his shop. He said he has back pro- blems and wants to be able to work close to home so he can rest when his back becomes too sore. Scugog Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm was the only member of council to support Mr. Thomas' application for the re- zoning. JV JUN PORT PERRY PLAZA - tad PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 16, 1986 -- 3 Between Township and the Fair Board No date yet for meeting A firm date has not yet been set for a meeting between Township council and members of the Port Perry Fair Board over the issue of a site for a new elementary school in Port Perry. The Fair Board had requested a meeting for this Wednesday even- ing, but several members of the Township council had prior commitments. The council met Monday evening with councillors from Mariposa Township to discuss the fire protec- tion agreement between the two municipalities and Scugog council was expected to hold a committee meeting following that to map out what to put on the agenda at the meeting with the Fair Board. While a date for the meeting had Council decision (From page 1) keep the commercial component out. When the development plan - originally came before council, it called for commercial development on four acres for a small neighbourhood plaza of convenience and personal service shops. Members of council at that time ex- pressed little support for that proposal. , The decision last week to delete the one acre of commercial land was supported by councillors 'Howard Hall, Don Cochrane, Neil McLaughlin and Harvey Graham. Councillor Yvonne Christie was - absent from the evening portion of the meeting. Mayor Jerry Taylor did not vote because the issue was not put to a recorded vote. Only Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm spoke in favour of the com- mercial component. Councillor Christie has been opposed to the commercial from the outset of this issue. not been set as of Monday afternoon, it is expected that the council and Fair Board will get together in the very near future. The council-Fair Board meeting is a result of the request made September 8 by the Durham Board - of Education for negotiations to determine if a seven acre site at the present Fairgrounds can be available for a new school. Board of Education chairperson Ruth Lafarga told the September 8 council meeting that the Board has carefully examined numerous alter- native sites in Port Perry for a new school, but the one at the Fairgrounds is the best possible site. The Fairgrounds is owned by the Township which has a lease with the Fair Board which runs until 1995. Last spring, members of the Fair Board and Agricultural Society voted against giving up the lease at that time so part of the land could . be sold to the Durham Board of Education for a new school site. Mrs: Lafarga told the council meeting September 8 that if the Board is to secure funds from the provincial government to start con- struction of a new school for comple- tion by September 1988, a decision on the site will have to be made by the end of next month at the latest.
