} -- hy i & " wn a... lhl i ae..." tw--snw sr n--LLLALLLER AS 26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, September 16, 1986 After 15 years in the bowling business, Jim and Vivian Rider (left) have retired and handed over the keys of Centennial Lanes to new owners Wally and Jayne Gotthelf. See story for details. Jim and Vivian retire from Centennial Lanes After 15 years of strikes, spares and misses, Jim and Vivian Rider have retired from Centennial Lanes. On August 15th, Port Perry's longstanding relationship with the Riders as owners of the communi-- ty's favourite and only bowling alley came to an end when Centennial Lanes was purchased by Waly - Gotthelf. Mr. Gotthelf has lived in the Port Perry area for some 15 years and along with his wife Jayne, is looking forward to running the alley. Mr. Gotthelf may be known to many people through his building business, or through the Summerlea Golf Course, which he bought in February. He has also owned and operated a motel in Florida for the past nine years. He took over Centennial Lanes as a 'business investment,' and if it ares the way it has for the Riders, it will be a successful one. As Vivian Rider points out, the FAMILY YMCA DURHAM REGION bowling alley has both been a pleasure and a business. Vivian and Jim are avid bowlers and for years their scores have been among the best. And she can still remember the first dollar ever spent at Centennial Lanes, when she and Jim took it over in 1971. "A dollar bought a hamburger, a coffee, and a large package of cigarettes, with a few cents change left over," she recalls with a grin. Jim, who spent many years with General Motors, and Vivian are both looking forward to their retire- ment when they can travel and still keep up with their favourite hobby ---- bowling. In fact, Jim has pro- mised to teach new owner Wally how to bowl. And although they are planning to enjoy retirement, Jim admits he'll miss running Centennial Lanes. "I'll miss it. And I think Vivian will miss it too."
