Legion won the game 4-3 thanks to Evans big hit. a Sports ------ (Frompagel) ney cashed him with a bunt single and he went to second on a throw- ing error. Then Dennis Rommeril reached safely by lining a hard shot off the pitcher's glove and then pinch runner Neil Rodd scored easi- ly on another bloop fly to shallow right field. Trevor Till drove in the final run of the Gamblers big inning with a two-out single. That made it 4-0 and Greenbank shut the door on the Garden River squad the rest of the way. THE PITCHING MACHINE While Gambler hurler Ken Goreski was calmly pitching his way to the championship, most eyes in the park were on Garden River ace right hander Darren Zack, who was easily the dominant figure in this nine-team tournament. The 25 year old Zack, who stands ~ well over six feet and tips the scales at about 270 pounds, proved time and again why he is considered one of the premier fastball hurlers in the Port Legion's Dave Dickson gets ready to hit the dirt on this play at third during opening game province. All he did over the weekend was toss every pitch in the seven games played by his team, a total of 50 in- nings in which he put 95 K's in the book. During one stretch, he went 40 innings without giving up a run and in one game fanned 19 of the 21 bat- ters he faced. Zack's pitching strategy was sim- ple enough: throw the rising heater past the hitter, then break his heart with a wicked change-up that had batters lunging at pitches way out of the strike zone. To the surprise of nobody, he was named the Most Valuable Pitcher in the tournament. He also showed ex- cellent fielding ability, and his power at the plate was evident by the fact he drew several intentional walks. As the tournament wore on, many fans and opposition players were wondering if he would finally begin to tire. Other individual awards for the tournament went to Don Beaton of the Gamblers for best average, .353 (six for 17 at the plate) and the MVP was given to Garden River catcher Steve Nolan who hit two homers, gunned down runners at second with ease and was behind the plate for all seven games. The Gamblers reached the final with victories over St. Mary's 5-1; Tavistock 5-3 in extra innings when Don Beaton won it with a home run to right centre; Port Legion 3-0 as pitcher Russ Korbak got some great defense. In the Gamblers only loss in the tournament to Garden River, Zack held them to just two hits while fan- ning a dozen.
