It allows people to tell about criminal activi- ty without getting directly involved. Anyone with information can call the Crime Stoppers numbers, at 1-800-387-8477, toll free, or 222-8477 and tip off police without giving their names. Cash rewards of up to $1, 000.are paid for tips leading to arrests in serious cases. Toronto and Regional Crime Stop- pers was set up in July, 1984 and now operates successfully in Metro Toronto and the municipalities of Durham, Peel and York. Crime Stoppers works, said Sgt. Sandy Ryrie, co-ordinator of the Durham program. Tips have led to the arrest of suspects in crime in- cluding murder, rape, robbery, burglary, assault, drug trafficking and drug smuggling. Statistics to the end of July show Crime Stoppers was responsible for the arrest of 421 people on 1,203 charges; the recovery of $255,229 in stolen property and the seizure of drugs with a street value of more than $11.3 million. Police Commis- sion Chairman Bob Attersley both say Crime Stoppers is a cost- effective program and definitely helps keep our streets safe. Less than $70 is being spent to resolve each case called to Crime Stoppers. On September 17, Blanchard's Pool Supplies will hold free of charge their 1st annual educational evening seminar all about closing backyard pools. Blanchard's says "It's when we are not using our pools that the greatest damage can occur. Maintaining the balance of chemicals and minerals in the water, although easy, if neglected can lead to serious and often costly problems." This year's evening will be held at the Latcham Centre and will be at- tended by many area pool owners. The guest speaker will be Dean Christy, from BioGuard Canada Ltd., a nationally known expert on pool water management. We believe the evening is impor- tant because, where else can a pool owner go for this much knowledge. Blanchard's Pool Supplies also sponsors a Spring evening in April when topics covered include open- Dean Christy ing the pool, proper disinfection and even planning a good pool party. "Owning a pool should be fun and we believe that these evenings show people the easiest and most economical way to keep it that way." Police Officer. He will not ask your name, but will take the information and assign you a code number. Your tip will be investigated and you'll be asked to call back tobe told if the information led to an arrest. You identify yourself by code number when calling back and if an arrest was made you are eligible for a cash reward. Crime Stoppers pays money for the arrest of a suspect, unlike most rewards which require arrest and conviction. A volunteer Board of Directors, made up of citizens in the communi- ty, determine the amount of the reward and make payments to those giving information. Police are not involved when rewards are paid. Crime Stoppers is a registered charitable organization and Board Members work to raise funds for rewards. Donations are tax- deductible and can be mailed to P.O. Box 54, Oshawa, Ontario. L1H 7K8. Mr. Tom Jermyn, an Oshawa lawyer, and Chairman of the Toron- to and Regional Crime Stoppers pro- gram, in the Region of Durham, said it's important for people to take an active part in the battle against crime, The news media also play a vital role in Crime Stoppers. The pro- gram is promoted through television 're-enactments of unsolved crime and with appeals by radio and in newspapers. Crime Stoppers needs the help of everyone to combat crime. You can help keep our community safe. If you have any information about serious crime call Crime Stoppers in the Ajax Pickering areas at 222-8477; all other areas can reach Crime Stoppers by dialing 1-800-387-8477 (toll free).
