8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August! 26, 1986 Perched on a wind-swept knoll in the middle of a farm Ay south of Port Perry, sculpter Bill Lishman's - latest creation rises as a modern day testament to the Druids of an- cient England. Autohenge looks exactly like the 'mystical circle of huge stones call- ed Stonehenge that sits on a plain in southern England. And well it should. For Lishman was commissioned recently by a Toronto advertising agency to create a replica of Stonehenge using wrecked cars. The agency wanted the replica for use in a TV commer- cial plugging two new Chrysler pro- ducts, the Shadow and the Sundance. Intrigued by the concept, Lishman accepted the challenge and went to work. He has never seen the real Stonehenge in England, so he went to the reference section of the local library and read as much as he could about the ancient Druid monument. He selected a site on land owned by Scugog farmer Sinclair Robert- son cn Durham Road 19 (Shirley Road) just east of the Oshawa Road and went to a Whitby wrecking yard to line up the nearly 50 derelict cars he would need to re-create Stonehenge. One of the conditions of the contract was that no Chrysler products could be used. After the motors were removed from the wrecks and fluids drained, they were crushed down to the ap- proximate size as the stones of Stonehenge. Chrysler introduced its new Dodge Shadow The commercials which were recorded last week with a background of wrecked cars positioned will be aired in mid-September. to look like the Stonehenge in northern England. There are a total of 19 up-rights and eight cross-pieces on the tops known as lintels. The wrecks were placed on end in holes in the ground several feet deep. The placement of the wrecks took about two weeks. In all 46 were used. The result is a remarkable recrea- tion of Stonehenge and Bill admits that walking among the wrecks in the quiet of the dawn evokes "a strange and eerie feeling." Last week, about 50 people from Bob Schulz Productions of Toronto moved onto the site to begin filming for the Chrysler commercial that _ will air in September. Bob Schulz was delighted with the creation and the setting. The original Stonehenge in England was built several thousand years ago and scholars estimate it took some 1500 men more than 15 years to haul the giant stones over 25 miles. Each of the stone blocks weighs some 25 tonnes. Scholars believe that Stonehenge was created as a kind of ancient calendar with the shadows created at certain times of the day and year playing a prominent role. For Lishman, the month-long pro- ject has been a lot of fun and it has brought him wide-spread publicity as reporters, photographers and TV film crews have been showing up almost daily. He told the Star on Fri- day that a friend in Virginia called him the other night to say he had seen a photo of Autohenge in a local newspaper there. He jokes about the fact that one stone at Stonehenge weighs more The amazing Bill Lishman does it againwithincredible Autohenge than the entire Autohenge recrea- tion and the fact that he put it all together in a few weeks without the help of thousands of slaves. And he suspects his creation will only en- dure about *'1/1,000th the time of the original." Now that the TV commercial film- ing is over, just what is the future of Autohenge. Lishman says he's not too sure. That depends on Mr. Robertson, who owns the land. There are indications that he will allow the creation to stand for the time being, anyhow. Autohenge is clearly visible from the Shirley Road and it's created quite a stir for motorists driving by. But then most of the work Bill Lishman does is unusual and out of the ordinary. A resident of Purple Hill for the past few years, he has built a giant stainless steel salmon for a com- munity in New Brunswick, a full scale model of a lunar landing pod, iron dragons for Wonderland and a giant spiral of cars, horses and peo- ple that has intrigued visitors to Ex- po '86 in Vancouver. With Autohenge now complete, Lishman says he doesn't have another project underway at the moment. But that most likely will change in the very near future. And one can be pretty sure that the next creation will be an unique as the last. , HOSPITAL REPORT Week Ending August 21st Admitted.................ccevvenennnnnn.. 33 Births..........coooeiiiiiien cree, 4 DRAINS ..covsrevsssmmsmmmmanmrsmmesnvess 0 Emergencies........................... 253 Operations................ccccoeeeeevnnnnnn 19 Discharged...............cccouuneennnn... 38 Remaining...................cc..ooeee. 34 Suk A cameraman takes a close-up shot of this rusty wheel as part of a Chrysler commercial.
