ii. Er 22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, August 12, 1986 Rivet overcomes poor grid spot Mike Rivet, driving the Dennis Anderson IROC Camaro finished a credible 8th at Mosport on Sunday in the Players Challenge series that was part of the Budweiser GT weekend of racing. Rivet's finish in the 15 lap event was somewhat remarkable con- sidering he started 28th on the grid after a slick track dampened his times in the qualifying heat on Friday. Racing team manager Mike Rysiecki said later that Mike drove a flawless race to move up from 28th to finish 8th. "He really had his work cut out for him. The car ran perfect- ly, there were no accidents and it was incredible that Mike passed 20 other cars,' said Rysiecki. Rivet now has 373 points in the Challenge Series, but with two events left in September, he has lit- tle chance of catching point leader Richard Spennard who has 513. But if Rivet can come up with two strong Jon's Auto n% Repairs performances he stands a good chance of moving up to third or even second place in the final points standings. The winner in Sunday's race was Robin Buck, followed by Spennard. Rivet had a poor qualifying time on Friday because of a decision by the racing team to use "wet track tires." In actual fact, the track was drying quickly and the wet track tires reduced the speeds. The team decided to opt for the wet tires to reduce any chance of an accident or spin-out that could damage the rac- ing car. On September 7, Rivet and the Anderson Chev Olds team will be in Sanair, Quebec for an event that's part of the Molson Indy, and the Players Challenge Series will wrap up for this season September 14 when the Camaros and Firebirds will be on the track at Mosport as part of the Budweiser Can- AM/Trans-AM weekend of racing. The McLaughlin Softball Tourna- ment held on August 2, 3, & 4, saw ~ a lot of fast action by all teams in- volved. Port Perry went down with all four Squirt teams and over two _ days had a great deal of fun, and a good learning experiénce. Out of 30 Squirt teams, Dowsons Valu-Mart emerged with the Sport- smanship Medallion awarded at the end of their 5th game on Sunday. Norm Tripp, Irwin Smith, & Allen Siding all placed in the next top rank of best sportsmanship teams. As a matter of fact Port Perry can be ex- tremely proud of their representing teams as we learned that we were the top 4 teams over all 100 teams at the tournament showing good sportsmanship.
