Heme TOM VANDERENDE Bill 94 attacks 'doctors by Ross Stevenson, MPP In this week's newscolumn,- I. - would like to inform you of some of the recent events of Queen's Park. The Legislature has closed for the summer. This does not mean that all M.P.P.'s have extended holiday. I will list some of my summer duties in this column. This session of the 33rd Parlia- ment ended Thursday, July 10. Before this could occur, many bills had to be introduced or voted on. Many of you will be aware of these bills. The list includes Bill 94 (Health Care Assessibility Act), Bills 54 & 55 (Drug Benefit Act), Bill 11 (Conver- sion of rental units to con- dominiums), Bill 30 (Education Amendment Act), Bill 77 (Riding Re-distribution) and Bill 103 (Elec- tion Expenses). I would like to discuss Bill 94, the doctors' strike and how re- distribution affects Durham York. The Progressive Conservative Par- ty did not support Bill 94. We are concerned about the future of our excellent health care system and ultimately the people of Ontario. We do not consider money to be the issue. It should be noted that while 12 percent of doctors were opted out of O.H.I.P., less than half of those extra billed. All doctors within Durham York operated within the O.H.LP. system. Our party agrees with the doctors that Bill 94 attacks their professionalism. While the problems exist in the current system, Ontario has one of the best health care systems in the world. Our party wants to maintain our high standards of health care. Greater government intervention can only lead to the deterioration in . services as is the case in Quebec and Great Britain. It is my hope that the conflict bet- ween our doctors and the govern- ment will soon be resolved. Ultimately, the health of Ontarians is most important. My colleagues and I wish to see the health care system operating for the benefit of the patients. Recent incidents have not been in the best interests of the people of Ontario. The second issue that affects peo- ple in Durham York is the re-- distribution of the ridings. An in- dependent committee was establish- ed 3 years ago to make adjustments to election boundaries based on population. Its affect is felt in Metro and its suburbs where the popula- tion has increased significantly since the 1977 adjustment. Durham York will witness moderate changes when the next election is called. Scugog Township and part of Pickering Township will no longer be part of Durham York. Instead, it will contain the Township of Whitchurch-Stouffville. After the pext election, Durham York will consist of Georgina, East Gwillim- bury, Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ux- bridge and Brock Townships. Twill continue to represent the consti- tuents of Scugog and Pickering Townships until the next election. As 1 mentioned earlier, the Legislature has closed for the sum- mer. I will continue with my riding office on Fridays, appointments with constituents at other times, at- tending events around the riding and sitting on the Legislative Com- mittee of Resources Development. If you wish to contact me, dial the operator and ask for 'Zenith 33130." I would be pleased to be of assistance in any way I can. Do not be surprised if you see me at local events in your community over the summer. I try to attend as many events in Durham York as I can and I encourage you to also support these local activities. 0 aa a TL a all i au: Rs mc. a mas LLC alba 0 pt Aan
