Shutter-bug wins first prize in photo contest Karen Milton is totally sur- prised. Her husband, Dave, is merely jealous. Karen, a 21 year old resident of Scugog Island, didn't consider her- self much of a photographer when she entered a picture she had taken in an Oshawa-Whitby This Week photo contest. She had taken the picture of a tumbling waterfall in Hawaii last January, when she and Dave were on vacation. When she read about the contest, Karen thought she'd enter the pic- ture as a lark. And then, a couple weeks ago, she was contacted by the newspaper and declared a winner. Happily shocked, she went down to Oshawa ta collect her prize, a Minolta 35mm. autofocus camera. "It was a total surprise!' Karen says with a grin. Dave, on the other hand, was slightly put out. "He's always taking pictures and he's really pretty good," she said. "And then I go and enter the contest and win it-and I hardly take pictures at all." The Temple of Fame returns to Uxbridge In 1902, a touring acting company visited the area and performed a melodrama *'The Temple of Fame' in the Uxbridge Music Hall. The show was a great success. Times and attitudes have changed since 1902, but great entertainment has always been a part of Port Perry and Uxbridge History. in August, "The Temple of Fame" is returning to the Uxbridge Music Hall, now as a musical melodramatical farce. Curious? "The Temple of Fame' is an ex- traordinary production because it encourages audience participation. You can be the villains or cheer on and sympathize with the heros, however, if you would rather just sit back, laugh, and enjoy--that is what the farce is all about! There will also be plenty of energetic singing, dan- cing and fine acting. The plot takes place in 1902 when a local girl, Sylvia Primrose, is tricked into signing a singing con- tract with the evil Mordred Grimstock (boo! hiss!). Imagine a pure, young woman working in an immoral, degrading saloon in the wicked city of Toronto! In the end, Sylvia is saved by a young man she holds very dear to her heart, Sterl- ing Morehouse. The original cast was a touring company. In 1986, we are fortunate enough to cast our own, local sensa- tions like: Rob Corbett, Bill Bagshaw, Mary VanWyck, lan Ball, Dorthy Partridge, and more! - in co- operation with two star entertainers from Canada's Wonderland (Jem- mie Phillips and Ron Vida). Tom is participating in the Jr. Farmer exchange and will be touring all parts of Ontario. We hope that he has enjoyed his stay in Blackstock as much as the Larmers enjoyed having him. The 6th annual Horseshoe Tourna- ment of Tom and Wilma Wotten and Claudette and Phil Archer was held over the weekend at the Archer farm "Devitt's Dungeon' with about 65 entrants participating. Under hot and hazy skies an en- joyable time was had by all with keen competition as well. Winners were: Ladies singles - Pat Millson, Mens singles - Terry Black; couples - Joan and Floyd Argue.
