But driver Dave Hopkins was Just a little bit nervous ~ PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 15, 1986 -- 25 Six cars no problem for this monster truck -- sss [& Dyna Six wrecked cars turned out to be a piece of cake for Dave Hopkins in "Big Bad and Boun- cy." He had no trouble crushing the wrecks Redmen nipped 12-10 Saturday morning, but Dave was a little worried about the rain. (See story) Dave Hopkins admitted he was a bit nervous just before noon' on Saturday. Dave is the owner and driver of "Big, Bad and Bouncy," the 'monster super modified Chev half ton that drew oohs and ahs from the Festival Days crowd in Port Perry over the weekend. He was scheduled to drive the truck over six wrecked cars at noon on Saturday, but the light rain that was falling added an element o. danger to the feat. Just minutes before he climbed in- to the cab of "Big, Bad and Boun- cy," Dave told the Star that rain would slick the wrecked cars, ad- ding to the possibility that the truck might slide over on its side. And he was concerned with the always pre- sent danger that the truck might go right over backwards in the effort to _ get up on top of the cars. As it turned out, Dave had no pro- blems at all. He took the monster truck over the top three times and when he was finished the six wrecks were flattened down like pan-cakes, much to the delight of a large crowd that stood in the light rain near Palmer Park to witness the feat. "Big, Bad and Bouncy' is no or- dinary half-ton. The only part of it that even remotely resembles a truck is the cab, a 1980 Chev short box. HIT THE TARGET It is powered by a 480 H.P. turbo charged engine, has front and back wheel independent steering (rear wheel steering is controlled by a tog- gle switch in the cab) and the tires are 66 inches high. From the ground to the top of the cab, "Big, Bad and Bouncy" measures 12'6" high. The tires, which cost $8500 each, are manufactured by Goodyear for timber skiiders. Dave, who owns and operates a speed shop and auto wreckers in Plainfield, near Belleville, Ontario, spent two full years assembling his truck, and the cost was about $150,000. He said that if someone started from scratch today to build a similar machine, the price tag would be in excess of $200,000. Why did he get into this kind of thing? "I've always liked 4X4's and just decided to try and build one like - this," he said. Putting on the demonstration at community events across Ontario keeps him busy every weekend of the summer. By late August, he'll take a break, put the truck in the shop and tear down the machine, replacing parts that need it. Just in case, you were wondering what the machine weighs, 'Big, Bad and Bouncy' tips the scales at ten tons. No wonder those six wreck- ed cars flattened out in a big hurry. Even Derek Keenan's four goal performances was not enough to give Brooklin Redmen a victory last Thursday as they went down to a 12-10 defeat at the hands of Bramp- ton Excelsiors in Ontario Lacross Association (OLA) major series action. . Redmen started out well holding a 3-2 lead at the end of the opening frame, but fell behind on an 8-7 ® margin heading for the third period. Brampton outscored Brooklin 4-3 in the final stanza for the win. Keenan's four-goal effort was backed up by a pair of markers each from Jim Wassen, John Fusco and Kevin VanSickle. Gil Nieuwendyk, Jerry Fitzgerald, Dale Kernohan and VanSickle each had two assists. Wayne Colley, Greg Kent, Wayne Briscoe, Randy Gllas, Fusco and Keenan one assist each. Laura Allen, 2, and Jimmy Newman, 2, went for a little cruise down on the midway Friday afternoon.
