More than 600 people crowded their way into a steaming auditorium at Port Perry High School last Thursday evening for the 465th Wintario Draw. The Draw, filmed live by Global Television, was a great way to kick off the annual Festival Days celebrations in the community. All of the 600 plus who were at the show received a complimentary Wintario ticket as part of the $5 ad- mission. It's not known if anyone held a lucky ticket that evening, but there were no loud shrieks of delight from the audience when the $100,000 numbers were announced. Despite the heat, the audience was treated to a fine show. Wintario co-hosts Faye Dance and Greg Beresford performed like the seasoned professionals they are, and Greg chatted on-camera with several members of the audience. Prior to the live show, the crowd saw an excellent hour of entertain- ment provided by local talent. The brothers team of Stewart and Stewart (that's John and Peter) raised more than a few hearty chuckles with their comedy routine on the old baseball favourite '"Who's on First." Decked out in lumber- jack shirts, toques and ear-muffs, and perched on cases of a well- known Canadian beverage, the brothers bantered back and forth about baseball. The Pine Ridge Clogger, under the direction of Irene Goonch swirl- ed and clogged their way through several dance numbers. For many people in the audience, it was their first exposure to this unique kind of dancing, which appears to be a com- bination of square dancing, step dancing and tap dancing. The Pine Ridge group is from the Blackstock area. Candy Stevenson demonstrated some pretty nifty and nimble foot- work as well in her solo dance routines that included modern and tap. Vocalist Lynn McLaughlin of Nestleton sang several numbers (accompanied on piano by her Mom, Linda) and demonstrated a strong and clear singing voice. It was quite an evening for this young lady. After the entertainment part of the show was complete, the draw was made for the free trip for two to the Bahamas. And who held the winning ticket? Lynn McLaughlin. The ticket was drawn by Stephanie Jones of the Bahamas tourist office in Toronto, along with Marg White of Nonquon Travel in Port Perry. Needless to say, Lynn was delighted with her good fortune. But she's not sure who she's taking with her to he hunamas The entertaifiment portion of the show was MC's by Joel Aldred, and as Wintario host Greg Beresford noted, Joel has not lost his touch as MC. Several dignataries in the au- dience were introduced during the evening, including former MPP and Cabinet Minister Dr. Matthew Dy- mond, Durham-York MPP Ross Stevenson and Scugog Township 'Mayor Jerry Taylor. All the proceeds from the sale of admission tickets will go to the Chamber of Commerce and will be used by the organization for many worthwhile projects in this community. This was the second time Wintario has held a live draw in this com- enthusiasts ably munity. The first was three years ago in March. Along with seeing the local enter- tainment and the live draw, the au- dience got a peek at what it's like for a network to film a 'live to air" production. Cameras, lights, props, cables, microphones and speakers seemed to be everywhere in the auditorium. A small army of Wintario produc- tion people worked to bring the en- tire show off without a hitch. The planning for the Port Perry show began several weeks ago and Bill Barr, with the local Festival Days Committee, spent countless hours working with the Wintario crew. They presented him with a plaque in recognition of his efforts. ~adffas The local entertainment por- tion of the Wintario show was MC'd by Scugog Township's Joel Aldred, a veteran TV host and personality.
