These thirty-two bowlers par- ticipated in a final tournament at the Queen Street site on July 2, 1986. Lawn bowling began at this Queen - Street site in the first decade of this century and has been a familiar spectacle here for over eighty years. On this historic occasion teams came from Cannington, Oshawa, Port Perry and Whitby. Although there was a degree of sadness to end an eighty year old connection between the Lawn Bowlers and the old site there was also a feeling of happy anticipation for the use of the new site on Sim- coe Street, North. During the past two years the membership has grown from 25 to 75. All members are looking for- ward to the date of July 7, 1986 after which all Lawn Bowling will be at the new site. The Club expects that this will be another beginning of an active period of Lawn Bowling for the future. The new facilities are located at Simcoe Street North and Regional Road 8. In that time he has worked on projects for me, and sharecropped my land. At times John owed me money, which he never failed to pay. I have known him as a hard-working, honest man. His problems, in my view, stem from his loyalty to his family, a lack of sophistication in business, and the general decline in commodity and farm prices, which have affected our entire farm industry. The sophistication in business should have been provided by the government Farm Assistance Pro- gram advisers, and by the bank. Un- fortunately, the former, being civil servants, had no stake in the mat- ter, not even their jobs. For their part, the banks were just as anxious to cash in on the boom in com- modities and farm land as anyone. Now that those profit sources have collapsed it's the little guy, the farmer, who is left on the hook, as usual. If John Schewaga misrepresented his assets to obtain loans it was out of desperation, and he should be treated with compassion. To date, actions against him appear vengeful and arbitrary. How is society serv- ed by jailing this family bread- . winner like a common criminal, and throwing his wife and child onto the welfare roles? The very fact that John has broad community support demonstrates that the court is not reflecting the "will of the people in this matter. It is a sad comment on our legal system that his is not an uncommon occurrence. Rich and powerful cor- porations and violent criminals More questions about local school Issue Dear Sir: To those who have been following the saga of the new school or rather the lack of the new school in Port Perry, it is interesting to note an ac- tion taken on June 23rd by the Board of Education. "The Ministry of Education has approved the Board's request to transfer 1986 capital funds from the Port Perry elementary school pro- ject to the unnamed Boddy PS. pro- ject in Pickering. The Board will proceed to acquire a suitable site in Pickering for the new school." I find it inconceivable that the Board has re-routed funds from Port Perry (because of the lack of a suitable site) to Pickering where there is, at present, no suitable site _either. We were told that develop- ment would have to start im- mediately in order to have the school open in 1987, we were also told everything was ready to go in Pickering. Unfair to Joe Clark Dear Sir: It was very unfair, in my opinion, to equate the up-and-down career of Joseph Clark with that of Richard Nixon. * Nixon was, at best, a shady character, while Clark has never done anything underhanded.
