The applecheeked Port Perry youngster with long, light brown hair is pretty nonchalant about her early success, more interested in playing with her friends than glamourous bright lights of the modelling profession, but the fact remains -- she is good at what she does. Just ask her mother, Twyla Ballagh, the lady who started young Dayna in the business about a year ago. ~ "Everyone used to say to me, when she was little, how she was cute or she was this or that", Twyla says. "I don't think I would have got her going in this if so many people hadn't said something to me." Former modelling agency direc- tor Karen Taylor of Port Perry gave Twyla a few names to contact, in- cluding 'New Faces,' an agency in Toronto. Within two weeks of calling New Faces, Dayna was booked for her first job, a flyer f~r K-Mart depart- ment stores. Her second job, not too much later, wa . an advertisement for Canadian Tire. Since then she has done work for The Bay (featured in the Toronto Sun), Tower's, Regal catalogues and Sears. The Sears Fall/Winter catalogue for 1986 is a big step for Dayna. Hun- dreds of youngsters try to break in- to the world of catalogue modelling, but only a handful succeed. And in the 1986 Regal Christmas catalogue, Dayna will be featured on the cover. What makes Dayna's success even more incredible is the fact she has had no formal training. Many children sign up for modelling or theatre courses in their attempts to model, but Dayna has done none of that. According to Twyla, New Faces was contacted, an 8x10 colour photo was sent out, and Dayna was work- ing. Just recent- ly, Dayna did a video audition for Hasbro Toys ---- a real honour, ~ since the company screened hun- dreds of photos before even calling a limited number of children in for the audition. Twyla says she doesn't expect to hear back from Hasbro for a while yet, but if Dayna does land the job, it could mean a lot to her. Regardless what happens, Dayna says she's quite content doing what she's doing ow. Dayna's having fun and she also gets to try on all sorts of trendy clothes. "She loves clothes," Twyla says.
