22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 24, 1986 Sports Gamblers ousted The Greenbank Gamblers were rolling along in great style on the weekend at the 'Geordie Easton Memorial Fastball Tournament" until they ran into a hot Oshawa A.C.L. club in the semi-final game. The Gamblers had won three games in a row in the tournament and everyone on the club was hitting with authority until Doug Spencer and A.C.L. shut them out by a 2-0 score and they were out of the tournament. A.C.L. only had three hits in the game off Russ Korbak but they all came in a row and produced the two runs in the second inning. The Gamblers had five hits off Spencer but they could not score a run. Earlier in the tournament the Greenbank bats were very much alive as they downed Port Perry Legion by a 10-5 score, got by the Oshawa Juniors by 6-3 and really levelled Bowmanville by a 17-3 count. However, their efforts went by the wayside with the loss in the semi- final. : Probably the most exciting gam of the tournament was played in Port Perry on Friday as the two rivals (the Gamblers and the Legion) went head to head again and produced their usual crowd pleasing effort. Ken Goreski and Russ Korbak teamed up to stop the Legion who in tournament semi-final held the lead into the fifth inning. However a big Greenbank rally car- ried the Gamblers to the win. Don Phinney was the batting leader for Greenbank with a three for three night at the plate. Oshawa Merchants were the eventual winners of the tourny as they edged A.C.L. 4-1 in the final game. The Greenbank squad was due for a loss as they had been on a 10 game winning streak prior to their loss to A.C.L. League Play In league play last week the Gamblers bested Oshawa Juniors by a 3-1 score as Gambler Veteran Ken Goreski led the team past Junior C to have four new feams in 3 divisions The Central Junior C Hockey League will be split into three divi- sions next season with the addition of four new teams. . Team officials agreed on the divi- sional make-up at League meetings last week, MoJack general manager Murray Parliament told the Star. The four new teams are Ajax, Madoc, Wellington and Brighton. The Ajax entry will be starting from scratch this year, while the three other teams have been part of the eastern Junior C loop that broke up after last season. The four new teams bring the total in the Central loop to 12, and it was for this reason that officials decid- ed to adopt the divisional format proposed by the Port Perry Mo- Jacks management. The MoJacks will be part of the Walter Crowley Division, along with Uxbridge Bruins, Lindsay Muskies and the Little Britain Merchants. Walter Crowley, who passed away two years ago, had a long associa- tion with the Lindsay organization. The Don Ogden Division will con- sist of Madoc, Wellington, Brighton and the Lakefield Chiefs. Don Ogden, also deceased, was from the Wellington area. The third division will be named after Vern McGregor, a long time coach and director with the Cobourg Cougars. He passed away last spring. This division will be made up of Port Hope Panthers, Cobourg Cougars, Bowmanville Eagles and the new Ajax Axmen. Each team will play three home and three away games with the teams in their division, and a single home and home series with the eight other clubs in the loop, for a total of 34 games in the regular schedule. The playoff format will be altered substantially this coming season with all series best of seven affairs. In each division, the first place team will play the fourth, and the second will meet the third place squad. The two winners will then play a best of seven to decide the divisional championship. Then the three divisional cham- pions will play a single game round robin, with the top two teams meeting in a best of seven to decide the league championship. Mr. Parliament told the Star that while the new formats were well received by most of the existing organizations in the Junior C loop, the Lakefield Chiefs management (last year's league champions) were not in favour and may lodge an official protest to the Ontario Hockey Association. However, since it was the OHA that approved the entry of the four new teams in this league, it is not likely that the organization will alter the new format. Mr. Parliament said the divi- sional format has several good points, including a reduction in out- of-town travel costs for the teams and the potential for strong rivalries to develop inside the divisions which should help to boost fan support and attendance at the games. The Port Perry MoJacks under new head coach George Burnett and assistant Ed Olsen, will open the Kids summer tennis set to start July 14 Monday, July 14 is the starting day for the Junior Summer Tennis Program. MoJack home games will continue to be Sunday nights: In other Junior C developments, it appears as if the OHA will reject proposals to allow a limited number of 21 year olds to play this coming season. Apparently, the governing CAHA is opposed to this as it doesn't like the idea of 21 year olds playing against much younger 15 and 16 year olds. . The Port Perry MoJacks manage- ment had been hoping that the changes would allow at least a cou- ple of 21 year olds on the roster this coming season, especially goal- scoring ace Brian Nicholson who has burned up the Central League in the past couple of years. The reason the CAHA balked at the proposal was apparently for in- surance reasons. ed a | hose, 4 ¥ * s NE J-- aad 3 ig H Greenbank Gamblers Neil Rodd gets set to step into a pitch delivered by Oshawa Juniors Mark Goreski, while Paul Goreski waits behind the plate. Gamblers went on to win this one in the Easton tournament on Saturday, but lost in Lt Oshawa Juniors and their excellent south paw Mark Goreski. Both pit- chers were in excellent form and Don Beatons two run homer was the big blow in the Gambler win. On Wednesday night at Durham Fields, Greenbank turned back the league leading Whitby ".egionaires by a 6-3 score and gained a tem- porary tie for the league lead. Roland Osske tossed a neat 6 hit- ter at the league leaders while his team mates collected 10 hits off Whitby's Brad Vaughan and Mark Coutu. Trevor Till led the Greenbank team with 3 hits with Don Beaton and Rodd Real each having a pair of hits. The Gamblers clouted 3 home runs in the game as Rodd Real, Trevor Till and Greg Rodd all slapped pitches out of Durham Fields. Next weekend sees the Gambler's at the Richmond Hill Invitational Tournament. Greg Rodd (centre without hat), received congratulations from team-mates after blasting a long home run. over the left centre fence during the Gamblers-Oshawa Juniors match-up Saturday at Durham Fields. That shot helped the Gamblers to 6-3 victory, with Russ Korbak taking the win. (See story). Fo PL BRE" gg the semi-finals. (See story).
