Such was the case last week as they held a barn rais- ing benefit to assist the de Wolde family. The de Woldes lost their pig barn and a great deal of stock in a recent fire and their neighbours were determined to help in any way they could. The afternoon started out with a giant bake sale, whereby local residents offered their culinary delights up for sale to the general public. This was followed by a strawberry social at Burns Church. Some 265 dishes of cake, strawber- . ries and ice-cream were washed down with bottomless cups of tea and coffee. The fun part of the event started with a celebrity cake baking con- test. Various residents were asked to bake their best cake and enter it. for judging. There were about a dozen entries and the judges had a difficult time coming to a decision, particularily in the best tasting category. Of course the judges, Whitby Regional Councillor, Tom Edwards, Scugog Councillor Harvey Graham and bakery owner Roxanne Reveler had the best part of the deal...they got a little fork-full of every cake. A rough job, but so- 'meone had to do it. : When all was said and done, Ken Brown was the winner in the best taste category with his chocolate Amaretto cheesecake; Bunny Cox had the best decorated, a beautiful doll with a full hoop skirt; John Cin- ~~ k got the nod as most humorous for his banana cake, complete with descriptive dialogue; Gary Young's giant pink pig was a hands down winner for the cake most represen- tative of the occassion; and Ross Batten was awarded a specia! category all his own for his sky-high political cake, The judges placed it into a special "most intriguing category simply because they knew it had to mean something, but no one could figure out what. After the judging took place, the entrants formed a parade, each car- rying their concoction over to the Community Centre across the street. There the cakes were auc- tioned off by way of a Chinese Auction. There was lots of fun to be had, but the merriment served a good purpose as residents took the oppor- tunity to use the auction as their way of contributing to a worthy cause. Almost $2,000 was taken in during the cake auction alone, with the highest priced cake going at $200. According to Margaret Davis, when the final tally comes in for the event, to include the strawberry social, bake sale, auction and "piggy" banks, the barn raising benefit should reach between $3,500 and $4,000. The de Wolde family might be residents of Scugog Township in black and white, living on the north side of the Town Line Road as they do, but as far as the residents of Ashburn are concerned, they are one of them. And Ashburn residents always look after their own.
