One of 22 chosen from 500 nominees Prestigious award for Mrs. Smith Florence Smith was overwhelm- ed when she heard the news. The friendly Prince Albert resi- dent was totally caught off guard when she was informed she was one of 22 senior citizens in Ontario to win the Province of Ontario Senior + Achievement Award. "Boy, did I ever get a shock!" she laughs. The award is a creation of the pro- vince, designed to celebrate June, Senior Citizens Month. More than 500 people were nominated for the award, but only 22 won it. What's more, Mrs. Smith was the only resi- dent in Scugog Township and sur- rounding area to win. It was her friends and neighbours Ilean Pugh and Eileen Hodgins who nominated Mrs. Smith, due to her many contributions to the community. At 82 she is still involved with Meals on Wheels, something she has done for nearly 15 years. She doesn't often miss a chance to deliver or drive herself, most often to reci- pienis many years her junior. Community Care also receives her services as she spends time tak- ing people shopping or to appoint- ments. As a life-long UCW member of Prince Albert United Church, Mrs. Smith regularly visits the sick or shut-ins and she manages the church kitchen, bakes pies, serves at suppers and hosts her fellow quilters.
