a LL ee Open house for x-r Medical Radiation Technologists- -it's a big handle but most people know them as the folks who take x- rays at the hospital. : It's a tough job that requires "highly skilled professionals who rarely get any credit for their work. While many patients take the time out to thank doctors and nurses, most people don't realize how hard the x-ray department works. Hopefully, Medical Radiation Technology Week will change all that. From Friday May 19th to Friday May 23rd an open house has been set up at Community Memorial Hospital to celebrate the special week. The community is cordially invited to tour through the x-ray department, where more than 7,000 x-rays were taken in 1985-86. It's a busy department, on-call 24 hours a day, and manned by a radiologist, two full-time medical radiation technologists and general technologists. Their job is to produce radiographic films to aid in the diagnosis of vaious diseases and in- juries. Their services take them to the operating theatres, emergency departments, patient bedsides, special procedure rooms and C.A.T. scanning suites at Community Memorial Hospital and other hospitals across the province. They administer a prescribed dose of radiation in the treatment of diseases and they assist the doctors in treatment planning using com- puters and radiation therapy "simulators. - : They must be familiar with every technical aspect of the radiotherapy equipment used for treatment and must exercise constant care and ac- curacy in applying the techniques for radiation treatment to the pa- tient. Alone or-in combination with surgery and/or chemotherapy (drug therapy), radiation has achieved considerable success in the control or cure of many types of cancer. One thing technologists don't do is '""read" x-ray film. He or she does not interpret the x-ray, but the technologist will check the film for technical acceptability to ensure that the information required for diagnosis is adequately recorded. The . film is "read" by a radiologist, a fully qualified medical practitioner who has specialized in radiology through post-graduate study through the College of Physi- cians and Surgeons of Canada. Physicians will also have some ex- perience in the interpretation of x- ray films. The radiation levels received from diagnostic x-rays are well within safe limits but it is to a pa- tient's benefit to limit lifetime ex- posure by keeping records of x-rays, including the type of x-ray, the name of the doctor or dentist and when and where it was taken. It is also helpful to ask doctors or dentists to explain the necessity of any x-ray ordered. "Routine" x- rays should also be questioned, especially for children. And if a pregnancy is being plann- ed, it's a good idea to have a physical exam and dental check-up with necessary x-rays before con- ception. Elective (not urgent) ab- dominal x-rays should be done dur- ing the first 10 days of a menstrual cycle to avoid possible radiation - during pregnancy. Pregnant women should not submit to having x-rays unless a doctor considers them to be to a patient's good health. For more information about x- rays, check out the x-ray depart- ment this week, anytime from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. [MACKEY & BAILEY BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS Saturday Mornings 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon Oshawa Rd., Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumber Building 16) 9895-7391 PUBLIC NOTICE AN APPLICATION TO AMEND THE DEVELOPMENT PLAN OF THE HAMLET OF NESTLETON STATION The amendment, as submitted by the applicant, proposes residen- tial uses within the site indicated on the map below. 1 COMMUNITY CENTRE If THE KINGS HIGHWAY NY 7A J / "\/ / V7 RESIDENT, IAL ALLOWANCE GH / SUBJECT PROPERTY RQ4AD -- HAMLET OF NESTLETON STATION -- In order to assist in the evaluation of the amendment application, the public is invited to provide input by way of submissions to Mr Earl S.
