Car racing fans in Ontario will have several chances this summer to see a new series of competitive racing featuring GM stock Firebirds and Camaros. Details of the 'Players Challenge Series" have been unveiled and the first of eight races was held Victoria Day Monday at Mosport, 20 miles east of Port Perry. And a car owned and sponsored by Dennis Anderson Chev-Olds in - Port Perry will be among the 74 machines competing for $200,000 in prize money over the summer months. The Dennis Anderson Chev-Olds car, with major sponsorship by Lightning Video International of Markham is a 1985 IROC Z Camaro finished in white with red trim. (see ad in this week's paper for details on this event) The Players Challenge Series will feature five races at Mosport this summer, one race in Montreal as part of Grand Prix; one at the CNE Toronto as part of the Molson Indy, and another at Sanair, Quebec as part of the Molson Indy. The series has major backing from Players, General Motors, Esso and Goodyear. In all, a total of 74 cars will be in the series (about 50 Camaros and the rest Trans-Ams) each equipped with same power plant, transmis- sion and chassis. As engine or other modifications will not be allowed, the racing series will be a real test of the drivers' skill. In each of the races, heats will be run to determine the top 40 cars to participate in the feature which will carry first place prize money of $15,000 per event. Points will be awarded throughout the series (worth $10 each) and a grand cham- pion will be declared at the end of the season. The races will be the sprint-type ea - > VOVFIEAR Rysiecki will manage. In the first of the series held Victoria DAy, Rivet drove to a 6th place finish, but could end up 4th as two disqualifica- tions are under appeal at this time.
