22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 21, 1986 ports Port Legion wins the Brooklin tournament The Port Perry Legion Men's Fastball Club has started this new season off on the right foot by cap- turing the 4th Annual Brooklin Fastball Tournament over the holi- day weekend, going undefeated in the process. With sunny skies and warm temperatures on Saturday, the weather got the players in the mood to play some serious ball and that they did by trouncing Fraserville 9-2. Newcomer Paul Graham pitch- ed a 6 hitter, giving up a run in the 1st and 7th innings, while never get- ting into any troubles. Port scored one in the second and third innings, with three in the fourth and four more in the 7th inn- ing to pull away at the end. Leading the hit parade for the Legion squad were Bill Bridge with three; Grant Jackson, Bill Owne, Paul Graham and Pete Christie with two; Ken Bryant and Jack Bright with one. Bill Owen hit his second homerun of the year. Game two had Port against Pon- typool with the winner going to the final. In a tight, well pitched game, Port's Lawrie Williams hooked up with Pontypool's Brent Callis and bested him 2-1. The winning run and scored in the bottom of the 7th jnn- ing with two out and Rick Evans on 3rd base by virtue of a fielder's choice, a stolen base and a passed ball. Rookie Newcomer John Butler stepped to the plate and calmly blasted a single to the left field to win the game. On Sunday, Port Legion waited for a team to play as all the one game' losers played off to get a finalist. Port came back in the top of the 4th with homeruns by Bill Bridge and Dave Dickson. Whitby tied it in their half of the fourth on back to back base hits. In extra innings Port dodged a bullet when with two out and two on base, Gary Vaughn (Whitby's best hitter) was inten- tionally walked to load the bases and Williams induced Moe Lefebre to end the 8th inning. In the top of the 9th inning Port 'Mike Rivet got his racing feet wet in a big hurry Victoria Day Monday , as he guided his IROC Z Camaro to a very credible sixth place finish in the first of the Players Challenge Series held at Mosport. He was driving the 'Port Perry Car," part of the Rivet/Dennis Anderson racing team that will be - making the circuit of the Players Challenge this summer. (see separate story for details on that) Rivet actually could end up with 4th place in the Victoria Day event as two of the cars which finished ahead of him were disqualified for '"'minor technical reasons," accor- ding to team manager Mike Rysiecki. If the appeals are denied and Rivet gets the 4th spot, he'll pick up a cheque for $2,000 and 85 points 'in the NASCAR rating system. Both Rysiecki and Port Perry Chev Olds dealer Dennis Anderson were more than pleased with the performance of the IROC Z and the put the game away with five unanswered runs. After Coutu had given up two runs and left the game with a runner on second base, in strolled Whitby's new pitcher John Annis to put out the fire. Inmediate- ly ex-team mate Larry Pilkey, Rick Evans and Jay Williams teed off on him and Port scored three more runs to roundout the game 7-2. In league play earlier in the week, Port Legion travelled to Oshawa and defeated the Juniors 10-2. At home last Thursday, they entertain- ed ACL and were bombed 12-6 in a sloppily played game. This year's league play should be quite exciting and the standings close from top to bottom osf some of the best teams in the area are com- peting. Newcomers are the Green- 'bank Gamblers and last year's 'B' Division Champs ACI. Rivet finishes sixth at Mosport way Rivet handled it. Other than practise on Saturday and qualifying heats on Sunday, this was Rivet's first on-track experience in the car. "Once he gets a little more ex- perience, we're convinced he'll go a lot faster and perform even better," Rysiecki told the Star after the races. There were 40 cars in the final, all IROC Z's or Pontiac Trans-Am's. Out of 68 cars that attempted to qualify for the final, Rivet had the - 9th best time of 1:48 around the twisting course at Mosport. People living in Scugog Township will have a chance to see the car and meet Rivet and other members of 'the racing team this Thursday even- ing (May 22) at Port Perry High School. A racing night will be held at the school in conjunction with the SADD program. (see ads in this week's paper) Anglers have a say A survey conducted by the On- tario Federation of Anglers and Hunters has found that 98 percent of those gurveyed want any govern- ment licence fees spent to improve sport fishing in Ontario. The federation, in a letter to the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources this month, says response to the surveys "was ex- cellent."
