King was a teacher in Port Perry a number of years ago before going into the Ministry. Lunch was serv- ed by Myrtle Snelgrove, Earlene Armstrong and Ilean Pugh. Mrs. Denise Thorn is leaving our village and we wish her well but would like to welcome Mr. & Mrs. Russel Hiltz and their little daughter who will be moving in soon. Thursday evening 14 tables were filled at the euchre. The winners Ladies: Marion Webster, Berenice Daniels, Ethel Irvine. Men: Bert Daniels, Ilean Pugh, Alvin Spencer. Infant Baptism received Graham Steven Scott, son of Larry and Sherry Scott of Union Ave. At the closing of the service each mother was given a small plant by the Sunday School Children that they had started from seed a few weeks ago. Last Sunday being "Mothers Day' Les Beacock again treated his wife, family and grandchildren to a scrumptious dinner at the in- teresting Greystone Equestrian Club (Shirley Rd.) All were invited to the home of Bryan and Judy Beacock for the remainder of the evening. During the years the custom of patronizing various eating places on this special occa- sion has grown to be a tradition. This year marked twenty-five years. All those present has helped 'make the annual gathering truly memorable. Birthday greetings to Mr. Langford of Hurd St. who was the guest of honour at a surprise birth- day party at the Community Centre on Saturday night. Please call Earlene Armstrong with your news next week at 985-7873: Mayor Jerry Taylor with Brian and JoAnne Callery display plaque that will be on display on the Herb Brooks Building in downtown Port A Queen Street building that has seen a number of businesses inside its walls over many years will be of- ficially dedicated this week in honour of the former owner, the late Herb Brooks. Brian Callery of Port Perry, who bought the building from Mr. Brooks in December, 1984, has had a brass plaque made for the dedica- tion which will be on May 15. The plaque will be mounted on the cor- ner, and the building at 154 Queen Street will be officially named after Herb Brooks. "Herb and I were very close friends. This dedication is something I wanted to do for him," said Mr. Callery last week. He went on to say that his buying the building stemmed from a hand-shake he 'made with Mr. Brooks several years ago. Herb Brooks operated a feed business out of the building for more than half a century. Five years ago, the feed business was sold to Robert Van Camp. He retained the business name, but needing larger premises, he moved the business to the present highway location. For many years, Van Camp Con- tracting shared office space in the building but that company as well had to seek larger premises. And now the present business be- ing operated on that location has grown to the point of expanded space. Port Perry Carpet and Tile, which was opened April 1 by Don and Wendy Murdoch, has run out of space. Perry, in memory of the late Mr. Brooks who ran his business there for half a century. (See story) But rather than move out, they will have more space thanks to a new 400 square foot addition at the rear of the store. Mr. Murdoch said he greatly needed the additional space which will be used for a showroom and allow him to stock more inventory. Last Friday afternoon, Mr. Callery and Mr. Murdoch invited Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor to cut a ribbon officially opening the ex- pansion and also to have a look at the brass plaque that will be mounted at the front of the store in memory of Mr. Brooks. Mr. Callery said he's not sure just exactly when the building was con- structed, but he believes it was prior to the disastrous fires that swept through Port Perry around the turn of the century.
