Club president Gail Chellew says figure skaters are up against stiff competition for ice time, from organizations like hockey clubs and ringette. Because of time constrictions, most Port Perry skaters hit the ice only twice or three times a week. But like Gail says, the really dedicated skaters are prepared to travel. Chris will be skating again all summer, but Mandy and Megan will not. The two girls have no dreams of "making it to the big time' and are content to learn as much as they can to do well at local competitions. '""You have to have lots of dedica- tion to be serious. You get so frustrated sometimes but you have to keep at it,"' Mandy says. "I only go to competitions for the fun of it, to see how well I can do. But test on the arena ice "ATTENTION? "You get out there and look around and everybody is watching you,' he says. Megan also gets pretty nervous before a competition. Before her very first one, she hid in the car, refusing to get out. . Iwas saying over and over, 'You can't make me go, you can't make me go!" she recalls with a giggle. Her mother, Gail Chellew, rolls her eyes. As we dragged Megan out of the car she said, 'You can make me go in but you can't make me put my skates on." Eventually Megan did make it on the ice. And how did she do? "I did the best I'd ever done!" Megan says, grinning. E ALSO HAVE 11 MODELS OF 2, 3,&4 VWHEEL ATV's TO CHOOSE FROM AND A LARGE SELECTION OF GOOD USED ATV's. Come and Test Drive One Today! Ontario farmers still waiting in the wings The Provincial Liberals' Speech from the Throne gave Ontario farmers no tangible or immediate action on the very real problems which they are facing today, accor- ding to Durham York M.P.P. Ross Stevenson. During the 1985 provincial election campaign the Liberals' promised a capital assistance program. But one year later, there is still no sign of any action on this promise. Reference was made in the Speech to "additional assistance...to enhance the tare and productivity of their (farmers') soils."' "My guess is that this government will simply expand the Ontario Soil Con- servation and Environmental Pro- tection Assistance Program which was announced by the former Pro- gressive Conservative government in March of 1983," said Stevenson. This program provided $25.5 million in grants, over 5 years, for erosion control and manure storage. OFFIRR (Ontario Family Farm Interest Rate Reduction) Program has expired and FIT (Farmers in Transition) is, according to one farmer "not fit to participate in." "Neither of these programs ad- dressed the reality of the fact that farmers are facing stiff competition from subsidized overseas markets | but are without any long term affor- dable financing,' noted Stevenson. In the Accord, which the Liberals signed with the New Democrats as a means to gain power in Ontario, a Farm Financing Reform package with low interest loans for farmers was promised. Stevenson noted that this promise, like the election pro- mise of a capital assistance pro- gram, is nowhere to be found. Stevenson insisted, "farmers need action and they need it now." Politically expedient promises may carry weight in some areas of the province but each day without responsible action by the govern- ment means more farmers will be forced out of farming.
