=, 4 5 | : i i ¥ Today it's just a field full of weeds. But in about four months time, a new house will stand on that field, a house that will be home for six special people with special needs. Last Tuesday evening (April 29) the Central Seven Association for the Mentally Handicapped turned the sod to start construction of Carlan House on a lot immediately to the east of the Central Seven workship on Durham Road 8. It will be a two storey home, finished in attractive brick and aluminum, with four bedrooms and some 2400 square feet of living space. : The completion date is scheduled for August 1 and six developmental- ly handicapped adults will start moving in to their new home. All will be taking part in the programs offered by the Central Seven Association. Construction of the Carlan Home this year is just part of a major ex- pansion for the organization that has been serving and helping the han- dicapped for almost 20 vears. At the Association's annual meeting, held in Port Perry April 29, board chairman Chuck Preston noted that by the end of August, there will be 20 people living in residences in Scugog Township: six in the Carlan House, eight in Smith House on Scugog Island and six more in three apartments in Port Perry. : Central Seven is also in the pro- cess of setting up a Life Skills Pro- gram in addition to the vocational skills provided through the workshop. Mr. Preston noted that in the past year, Central Seven's annual budget has more than doubled from $325,000 to $750,000. About $535,000 of this budget comes from the provincial government, the rest from revenues generated at the Workshop and through donations from the community. Mr. Preston has completed his two year term as chairman called on the new Board of Directors to '"'continue to maintain and improve the services we have to offer."
