ER 170 take part in all-Canadian competitions The Junior Judging Competition for 4-H Calf Club members, held in conjunction with the 43rd All- Canadian Contest, captured the in- terest of 170 Junior contestants from nine Provinces. This is the lowest entry in five years; 1984 tallied 347 ballots. It is anticipated that this count will increase in subsequent years because contest participation is a requisite of our new Junior Membership Program. Two contestants scored 134 points and named the correct Honourable Mention. According to the rules, a draw was conducted 03 February - 1986 to determine the winner. Joanne Crowley of Norwood, On- tario was declared the National win- ner with Brian Carscadden, Russell, Ontario as the Reserve. Since the revision of the rules in 1981, no perfect scores have been realized. The All-Canadian Judging contest was changed due to pro- blems caused by late postal delivery of the Journal. Some 4-Hers were not receiving the January Journal, which contained the All-Canadian nominations, in time to participate in the contest. By moving the deadline ahead, it also interrupted ible news of the contest results getting out beforehand to 4-H members taking part in the judging. In order to compete in the 1985 con- test, 4-H members were required to request the ballot and copy of the All-Canadian nominations by 01 December from the Holstein Association. A ballot and pages of pictures of the nominated animals were mailed out by first class mail 20 December 1985. The deadline for contest material was 08 January 1986. We were pleased with the par- ticularly high contest involvement from provinces outside Ontario. In the 1985 competition the Senior Yearling Heifers category caused the most problem, where for the first time in the history of the con- test, a milking Senior Yearling cap- tured the All-Canadian honours. Runner-up in the contest is 'another sharp 4-H member, Brian Carscadden, Russell, Ontario. He too, scored 134 points. Brian is the son of Barry and Heather and belongs to the Russell Calf Club. Seventeen year old Brian has won numerous prizes as a showman. He has been Champion Showman at his 4-H Calf judging entries lower than usual County 4-H Show for the past seven years and was Reserve Champion Showman at the Ottawa Winter Fair in 1984 and third in 1985. He was Grand Junior Showman at the Contact Hays Classic in 1983. Additionally, his Intermediate Hols- tein Calf was Reserve Champion at the Ottawa Winter Fair last year. This grade 12 North Dundas High School student plays junior hockey and in his spare time clips cattle for herds and sales. Brian was award- ed $25 and a Century of Achieve- ment book. He will also receive a prize from the Ontario Branch as a second highest placing contestant in the area. The remaining National winners will be awarded cash prizes and the Journal's Century of Achievement.
