Daa ae oul aa oA o. _g Ty _-- 18 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 6, 1986 The Merry Widow is a winner af Town Hall 1873 Last week Townhall 1873 swayed to the waltzes of Franz Lehar's '""Merry Widow," superbly presented by the Scugog Choral Society. Barbara Taylor-Bone gave a scin- tillating performance as Madame Glavari, particularily thrilling the audience with her Tonally True in- terpretations of "Vilia."' A masterful lead performance by Charles O'Connor as Danilo was backed up by humorous stage ac- tivity by both Don Taylor and Barry VanCamp. Strong portrayals both musically and dramatically by Carol McGrath and Walter Bone added credence to Above, Anna, The Merry Widow herself (as played by Barbara Taylor-Bone), checks on her YaRD-MaN &§f/----COUNT ON US! the storyline. However, the whole show is held together by a Scugog Choral Socie- ty that is obviously growing in stature with each presentation. The fine choral singing of the group pro- duced more than one tear during the haunting' and emotionally rich melodies. Visually the show was top notch. Phenomenal attention to costuming (which had to be extremely time consuming for costume mistress Debbie Colston) combined with an intricate and beautifully con- structed set made this an evening to remember. Doug Farndale has to be congratulated for this stage design, as has Aenea. .....e for his stage direction, and Pat Smith for her entertaining choreography, par- ticularily the "Can-Can" girls. All this was amalgamated by the totally professional musical direc- tion of Tom Millar. There are still four shows to go from Wednesday, May 7th through Saturday May 10th, and there are still some tickets available at Irwin Smith's Music Store in Port Perry. Anyone who misses this perfor- mance is missing an opportunity to experience musical theatre at its' best. The Merry Widow delighted the crowd at Town Hall 1873 with fine music and comic acting, and. will continue to delight during sleeping s suitor (reluctant as he may be), Danilo performances on May 7, 8, 9 and 10.
