The community service discussed is that of Home Visiting. The Public Health Nurse, (P.H.N.), is a university trained R.N. employed by the Regional Municipality of Durham, Depart- ment of Health Services. The meeting was opened by the President who welcomed all and one new member, followed by the singing of O Canada. General business was in order, foremost, was the Senior Citizens euchre tour- nament to be held at Latcham Cen- tre Wed. Apel 30th at 1:30 p.m. The next euchre for the public will be May 7th at 1:30 p.m. After the close of the meeting we were entertained by our own choir, who were super as always - good work folks. Also to the choir leader Win Philip - great praise. At 5:30 we enjoyed a pot luck sup- per. We were joined by the Ajax Senior Friendship Club and also by Mr. Bill Murray and wife, who led . us in square dancing etc. - he was also great. At 7:30 the Country Rovers arriv- ed to entertain the rest of the even- ing - they also did a very fine job of getting everyone up to dance. All in all gveryone had a very good time. So once again many thanks to all the above mentioned - you were all great. These are just a few examples of the services the P.H.N. provides in the home visiting program of the Department of Health Services. She has an abundance of information about community programs and supports and can assist clients in becoming more independant in meeting their health care needs. Pleas¢ help celebrate Nurses Week, May 4-10. serve 10,000 seniors The goal of the Nursing Division of the Regional Municipality of Durham Department of Health Ser- vices is health promotion and disease prevention, through educa- tion that will allow the individual to be responsible for his or her own health and well-being. According to a recent study con- ducted by the Senior Citizen's Cen- tre in Oshawa, there are 19,500 in- dividuals over the age of fifty-five living in Oshawa. The Health Unit classifies a senior as anyone sixty- five years and over. Therefore, ap- proximately 10,000 seniors could potentially receive services from Public Health Nurses. Approx- imately twenty per cent of all Public Health Nurses visiting time is devoted to the geriatric population in the Regional Municipality of Durham. Referrals to visit senior citizens in the community come from various sources such as: liason Public Health Nurses in clinics and hospitals, the Home Care Depart- ment, community agencies, self- referrals and doctors. Once a refer- ral is received into any of the four area offices of the Health Unit, a home visit is made to the client to assess his or her needs. With a client who has a heart condition, the Public Health Nurse could be in- volved in monitoring blood pressure and pulse and reporting back to the family physician. Care of the senior may also include the Public Health Nurses assessment of how well he or she is able to manage with activities of daily living, particularly if living alone. Education of the client in the areas of disease management (i.e. diabetes, angina) nutrition, medica- tion awareness, environmental safe- ty and community resources are just a few of the areas of respon- sibility for the Public Health Nurse. Many of the seniors apartment buildings in the Region are visited on a regular basis to provide service to clients. Many seniors are able to live in their own apartment and re- main in t because of the regular Public Health Nurse visits and services of other community agencies. According to Statistics Canada, one third of Canadians will be older than sixty-five by the year 2021. With the extremely high cost of institutional care, it is imperative that the Public Health Nurse con- tinue efforts toward health promo- tion and disease prevention with the aim of keeping an aging population as healthy and independent as possible.
