20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 8, 1986 Terrific season for Curling Club Blackstock and Area News by Joyce Kelly The Annual Awards Night Ban- quet of the Blackstock Curling Club was held on Saturds y'evening in the United Church C.E. Room. Presi- dent Harold Wright welcomed the large number of curlers and their friends in attendance after all had enjoyed a delicious pot luck dinner. Harold reviewed the years activities which had included four bonspiels and several fun events. One eight ender was a highlight of the year. Gerald Kelly presented the financial report. Prizes for the three leagues were then presented. Kathy McLaughlin presented the plaque for first place standing in the Ladies League to Joyce Kelly, Rie Hogeveeen, Mary DeMerchant and Tracy Vernest. Se- cond place winners were Elaine Bailey, Janet Weir, Rosie Hassall and Brenda DeJong. Third place winners were Melanie Wright, Lin- da Maw, Mary DeMerchant and Toni DeNault. Dale and Janet Van- Camp of the Mixed League presented the trophy and prizes to first place winners Dave and Nan- cy Barr, Howard Bailey and Joy Werry. Dave Barr also received a prize for the Best Shot maker. Se- cond place winners were John Green, Joyce Kelly, Keith Goble and Rose Creighton while third place was taken by Dale and Janet Van- Camp, Lawrence VanCamp, Elaine Barton. The Men's League trophy, The Merlin Suggitt Trophy, was won by Keith VanCamp, Laurie Hart, Craig Larmer and Rich Miller. Second place team was Doug Kadowaki, Brian DeJong, 'Barry Swain, John Doyle and Robert Doyle. Third place winners were Doug Kadowaki, John Churchill, Jill Churchill and Neil McLaughlin. The Executive for 1986-87 will be past president Harold Wright; President -- John Churchill; Vice- President -- Doug Kadowaki; Secretary-Treasurer -- Gerald and Joyce Kelly; Directors from Men's League -- Cameron Porter - two more to be appointed in the Fall. Mixed -- Dale and Janet VanCamp, Laurie Hart, Gerry Creighton. Ladies -- Yvonne Burnett, Mary DeMerchant, Alice Waldriff. A suggestion to change curling to Thursday and Fridays will have to be studied by the Executive. Also the Executive was instructed to check about costs of joining the On- tario Curling Association. The remainder of the evening was spent playing cards and enjoying a social time. The Scouts will be putting a box at the dump for bundles of newspapers for their collection. If anyone has a large quantity, pick up - can be arranged by calling Doug at 986-4339. They are holding a bottle drive on April 19. The Scouts are planning to go to Fort York in May and so the hard work in fund rais- ing. They thank you for your assistance. On Friday evening Gord and Cathy Paisley attended the 7th An- nual "Andy" awards show at Mohawk College, Hamilton. This show is produced by the students in the Media Studies department anc es the achievements of students in the Advertising, Graphic Arts, Radio, Broadcast Journalisn and Television Broadcasting depart ments. Craig Paisley was the reci pient of a special scholarship -- Th Hamilton Public Relations Associa tion Award. Craig was als( nominated for the major "Andy' award in Broadcast Journalism anc Town Hall 1873 Gala (From page 19) Hall supporters were thanked and a note of gratitude was extended to Dr. Tom Millar for his talent and generous support over the years. Dr. Tom acknowledged this from the audience. Former board chair- man Dr. John Hammett, Dr. Ralph Price, James Catty, Nigel Harvey, Bill Brock, Doug Farndale, Howard Hall, Les Parkes, and Jack Cottrell were also recognized at this point. Mention was also made of the Hall's many activities and the two busy main 'user' groups, the Scugog Choral Society and the Borelians Community Theatre, both of whom have musicals currently in prepara- tion for April production. The stage portion of the evening was completed by Vice-chairperson os HEI Ii Marg 'anCamp who gave a run- down on the Hall's cultural ac- tivities, thanked its supporters, and announced the '86-'87 Subscription Series, to be headlined by Salome Bey and, later, the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Series tickets will be available in late May or early JuneX In celebration of the anniversary, a wine and cheese reception then followed in the lower hall. Most of the audience lingered to meet the performers, enjoy conversation with fellow concert-goers, and browse through Les Parkes' carefully prepared Historical record of the hall set up on tables decorated by Debbie Colston. The tables were decorated with balloon bouquets, plants and candles. The Ode and Mary Stewart Col- lect started the meeting. Secretary read letter that a bid has been made for Ploughing Match in our area in 1980. In 1987 Williamsburg was changed to Blackstock and we had a discussion on how the W.I. could help celebrate 100 years of our village. A report was given from the nominating committee. Elva Van- Camp, our life member, conducted the election of officers as follows: President -- Mrs. Roy McLaughlin; 1st Vice -- Mrs. Harold Luke; Secretary-Treasurer -- Mrs. Doug Sleep; Pianist -- Mrs. A. Watts; District Director -- Mrs. Carl Adams; Alternate -- Lillian Wilson; Public Helations -- Helen Brad- burn; Sunshine Committee -- Mrs. John Kristensen; Auditors -- Mrs. J. McArthur and Mrs. B. It is great to see Wes looking much 'better after his illness in the winter. Janet VanCamp attended the On- tario Modern Language Teachers' Association Conference at the Har- bour Castle in Toronto on April 3 to 5. At this 100th Anniversary of the association, Janet led an workshop on Enriching the Core French Pro- gram.
