Well, wasn't that a party! Special ing line, a full house, and Moe Koft- man with his Jazz Quintet at Town Hall 1873 on Saturday night. It was a decidedly new wrinkle for the pro- gressive Hall Board, but one that didn't need any ironing out. All the Hall's Tenth Anniversary Gala " celebrants loved it. under the generous patronage of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Jackson, in his second performance at the Hall, Koffman dazzled arid delighted the capacity audience with an electric virtuosity that would be hard to match anywhere. Moe set the tone for an evening of bouncy, easy listening by announc- ing each of the numbers from the stage in an open programme for- mat. Starting off with a Bernie 'Senensky (his pianist) composition, The Romp, Moe on flute claimed he found the Hall to be "very bright" soundwise. So was the number. popular. of Cantata 140 (loosely translated as "Wake Up, You Dumb Turkey," ac- cording to Moe) was a crowd- pléaser and featured jazz improv by gifted guitarist Ed Bickert. Father Fugue, with jazz riffs and some frisky Koffman flute fingering, was also a winner. The strong rhythms and emphatic beat of Ellington's famed composi- tion Caravan displayed Moe's vir- tuosity on sax and his famous flute. This was followed by his personal tribute to a Cuban saxophonist, Pe- quito, a bouncy Latino creation. Then multiple variations on My . Heart Belongs To Daddy, original- ly noodled by Moe with Dizzy ' Gillespie, another jazz great, gave the entire quintet and workout. Ber- nie Senensky"s piano solo was a highlight of this item. Moe closed the first Half with a quote from Gillespie: "My Heart belongs to Daddy -- but the rest of me belongs to Momma." After that, they need- ed a break. The second half, as Moe promis- ed, got "even better." The quintet had performed in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on a 1985 cultural exchange spon- sored by Spar Aerospace. As Cana- dian ambassadors, Koffman and the Quintet learned and performed some South American compositions. One of these, Coffee Ice Cream (translated from Portuguese), pro- ved to be the hit of the Town Hall show with its pulsing rhythms and images of tropical rain forests, jungle moods, and bossa beat. Elec- tric piano, whistles, two guitars, drums, and Moe of sax built to a "hot Brazilian" treat. A dramatic change was provided by the followup, the bluesy, moody Magnificent Cat, adapted by Moe from Bach's Magnificent (Adagio). Then the showstopper -- Alex- ander's Ragtime Feast (would G.F. Handel still recognize his work?) -- a breathtaking display of notes, scaled down from a big string group to the quintet's size and played to perfection. It was a challenge throughout to Moe on flute for breathing and fingering. The crowd loved it, with all its 'star turns' from each member of the quintet. The remainder of the show con- sisted of Winter Season, adapted group's new album - hwat else but One Moe Time, the title tune: an , smooth number which yed the entire group's talents and their eclectic style, with in- dividual soloes and superb drum feature by Barry Elmes. The final scheduled number was Koffman"s signature tune, his ¢wn Blues, which also served as a curtain call for each individual member of the quintet.
