The kids at Port Perry High School have been practising their polishing for this Saturday (April 5th) when the SADD organization (Students Against Driving Drunk) joins forces with Dennis Anderson Chev-Olds to present SADD Saturday. For 10 hours, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., members of SADD will be on hand to fill up gas tanks, and clean windshields. For every litre of gas sold, Anderson's will donate eight cents to SADD. Funds raised by the venture will help pay for travelling expenses incurred by SADD's busy lecture circuit. Rh PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, April 1, 1986 -- 39 Riding cable cars in hot trip to California Ashburn and Area News by Mrs. E. Heron I would like to thank Florence Ashton for writing the news for the past month and keeping you all up to date on the Ashburn activities. My husband, Ted and I, with our daughter Doris and husband Bill McAndless enjoyed a wonderful 23 day trip to California. We did everything from riding cable cars in San Francisco, climbing a light house, having our pictures taken on the steps of Nelson Olsen's store where the Little House On The Prairie was made seeing Hollywood and many other things we had never expected to see. Perhaps one of the highlights was the Grand Canyon. Did you know it is 227 miles long and 27 miles wide? A breath taking sight but we "F & R SAWMILLS Cedar Lumber for Decks, Siding, Pole Barns, etc. Pine Available on Request - Portable Sawmill and Planer. We also saw the painted desert and the petrified forest. How mysterious it is that a tree that fell millions of years ago has turned in- to beautiful solid rock that Jewelry can be made from. Perhaps the most unexpected privilege we had was , we saw the passion play "The Glory of Easter" at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, an unforgettable creation. There were tears shed when our bus family parted, but it sure was good to be home. There was a good turnout at Hor- ticulture Society last Wednesday evening. Betty Van Buuren, special- ly welcomed all the new members and visitors. Veronica Colangelo in- troduced the speakers John Rae and Rod Lewis from the So-Green Com- pany in Don Mills, who showed us slides of Lawns and Flowers and with a running commentary told us how to use fertilizers to make our lawn and flowers look well cared for. There was also 'Fun with Flora' that took the form of a contest who could name the most songs with the name of a flower in it. The group with the most men in won the con- test. Some things coming up are a plant auction on May 10th and the district annual meeting will be held this year at Pickering Village on April 12. Next meeting will feature Jean Foss, speaking on 'Judging Stan- dards'. Everyone is warmly welcomed to these ' euchre will be on April 10th. Everyone welcome. from a holiday in Bermuda. There will be a dance fea 'Magnum' at the Thunderbird Golf p.m. under the auspices of the Com- munity centre. For tickets call Gail Gray 656-4628 or Kathy Godden 655-8713. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Young and family enjoyed a skiing holiday in Vermont recently. April 20th is Commemoration Sunday at Burns Church at 7:30 in the evening the 'Torchmen' from St. Catherines will present an evening of Gospel Music. Burns Church looked lovely on Easter Sunday morning with an Easter Lily and several pots of daf- fodils and narcissus. Rev. McEn- tyre's message was titled 'Easter Joy" and he told the children a story about 'Those Beautiful Butterflies.' The Scriptures were read by Ber- nice Gardner and Ron Ashton. The
