Ontario FINAL PUBLIC NOTICE ~ EARTHFILL DYKE PROJECT NONQUON WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA Ducks Unlimited Canada, in co-operation with the Ministry of Natural Resources, Lindsay District, is proceeding with two earthfill dyke projects. One project is on Lot 19, Concession 11, and the second project is on Lot 19, Concession 10 of Scugog Township (formerly Reach Township). The first project, referred to as Cell B, is 1.8 ha in area while the second project, referred to as Cell C, is 2.4 ha in area. In April of 1984 these two projects were proposed to be completed by the Labrador Retriever Club (Ontario). However, this club could not meet all the requirements of the class environmental assessment planning procedures and the project was subsequently shelved. Ducks Unlimited Canada has re- quested that the two projects be re-activated, since they are willing to go ahead with them and since they are able to meet all the requirements under the class environmental assessment planning procedure. Cell B would require two earthfill dykes to control water level. The main dyke would be approximately 65 metres in length, 15 metres wide at the base, and would contain the water control structure. The water control struc- ture would consist of a vertical intake pipe, 1800 millimetres in diameter with one side consisting of removable planks or stop-logs, similar to a dam. The intake pipe would be connected to a culvert 1200 millimetres in diameter leading through and under the dyke. The confinement dyke would be approximately 50 metres long, 15 metres wide at the base, and would contain an overflow culvert 600 millimeters Cell C would require one earthfill dyke approximately 75 metres long, 15 metres wide at the base, and would contain a water control structure and through-the-dyke culvert indentical to that described for Cell B. Following construction, the side slopes of the three dykes and borrow area (which would be located adjacent to the dykes in high ground) would be planted with grasses and shrubs as required. This vegetation would stablilize the soil and provide food and shelter for wildlife.
