6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 4, 198¢ Letters A memory of Tommy Douglas Dear Sir: I have been fortunate enough to know Tommy and Irma Douglas personally. I mention both because they are an excellent example of a regular occurence in the political life of our nation, a couple who work as a team even if only one is getting public atterition. Both dedicated _ their lives to proving that we are not just selfish beings and that every in- dividual in this world is important no matter who they are. In many years of political activi- ty when I because discouraged or cynical, I only had to hear Tommy speak to be inspired. And his jokes always cheered me up. One of the best speeches I ever heard was one he gave in Regina in 1983 at the 50th anniversary of the founding of the CCF. He talked about the three major issues he felt we had before us. The importance of people having jobs, the need for universal medicare where people "Special" (From page 5) portant. This is unfair to existing House League teams and should be discontinued. Finally, the 0.M.H.A. Minor Hockey Manual of Operations states that House League should be strictly recreational and fun for par- ticipants. As a result of the constant tampering of this year's teams, some of the fun has disappeared but the key word here is recreational: House League is for the players. Let's keep it that way. Joan Butt, Valerie Cranmer, John Criscione, Mark Lovering, and 15 others who signed the letter. Editor's Note: At a meeting Satur- day between parents and Hockey Executive, it was decided that the player in question will not be allow- ed to play any more House League games this season. Childish (From page 5) We, the parents, should teach our children proper condugt on the ice, in the dressing room and respect for the people who are in charge of them. Temper control. If your child is being abusive or mistreated, then we should step in. Let's leave the game to the kids, the coach and Minor Hockey. By the way, where are all the peo- ple at the annual meeting when you are needed! : Sincerely, Paul Saulnier. We still have people who believe that only they are important and only their interests must be served in our society. We have peo- ple who believe that some people don't deserve a fair share in our society because they are poor or dif- ferent. We are still ready to tram- ple on human rights. We still have governments that think you solve unemployment by manufacturing weapons. When I get down in the future I'l] have the memory of Tommy Douglas to keep me going. I won't forget, Tommy. Sincerely, Margaret Wilbur.
