14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 25, 1986 ISCF Sample Fair this Saturday Good stuff for free Stuff for free? There must be a catch, right? "a Not really. When the Sample Fair arrives at Port Perry High School March ist, fair-goers can pick and choose a wide variety of products and take them home for the low, low price of nothing. : There is a catch, but it's only a small catch. All you have to do is pay a $3.50 admission at the door and everything inside the gym- nasium is absolutely free. Admission fees will be collected and distributed to .various charitable organizations, including Port Perry Community Care, Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, and a Christian Blind Mis- sion where multi hahdjcapped children attend special boarding 'schools designed for their needs. Tuition in these schools, located in underprivileged countries, is $250 and the ISCF groups say if they can raise enough to put even one person through the school, the Sample Fair package containing a digital clock, a duffel bag and an ultra expensive pen, worth a total of $70, ""There's a lot of valuable things .to be given away," says organizer Laura Binkley. "There's no cars or anything but then again we're not trying to be Hollywood." Laura, 26, isn't exactly an ISCF member. ISCF is a common group of in- itials to anyone who has attended high school in the last 30 or so years, but it's never been at the forefront of any school activity, the way cheerleading or football might be. The group is huge in the United States and got its beginnings in Canada some 50 years ago. Now it boasts close to 450 clubs in different high schools in Canada alone. '"The high school end of it is going to encourage people who are Chris- tian that religion is important, not just stuff for Sundays," Laura says. Ministry throughout the Port Hope District maintenance area. Approximately 30 ISCF members meet in Port Perry once a week (the Uxbridge group is much larger) during the noon hour, when the members often watch films, listen to speakers, or get involved discuss- ing some relevant topic. Sometimes its all work, like the members have been doing planning the upcoming Sample Fair, but more often its pure fun. Port Perry ISCF president Janice Evans recalls the time the group organized a dating panel where four popular teachers were interviewed about their dating habits prior to marriage. The interviews kicked off a whole discussion about dating in general MUFFLERS - BRAKE LININGS - SHOCK ABSORBERS -- GUARANTEED FOR AS LONG AS YOU OWN YOUR CAR! -- Laura Binkley (left) and Janice Evans will have even more to smile about if their Sample Fair at Port Perry High School goes , according to plan. The fair which offers a multitude of free pro- ducts to all who pay admission, will be held this Saturday with pro- ceeds used for charitable projects. "Some people claim ISCF members are dull and I don't like hearing that because they're not." Janice and Laura still talk about a "'gross-out" party the group once had, where a straw-stuffed shirt and pants held a bowl of dip on its headless shirt collar and a bigger bowl of chips in its lap, and where a wall of chewing gum was a party prize. "It WAS really gross," Laura recalls, crinkling up her nose. "Yeah, but it was fun," grins Janice. Prayer, of course, and Christiani- ty in general, is a big part of ISCF, but what makes it all really in- teresting is the group's non- denominational stance. Students from all church backgrounds belong and that often makes for some fascinating discussion. It also pro- motes more understanding between different sects. ISCF members have been busily promoting themselves lately in their various communities and the Sam- ple Fair is one way they've been do- ing it. But even if you're not interested in religion or even the ISCF, you'll probably be interested in the Sam- ple Fair. "Just remember," Laura says with a smile, "First come, first served."
