Heron Everyone who lived here in the area on February 12, 1967 will dremember the feeling when our beloved church went up in fire and smoke. After the first shocks were past we realized that only the building, not the church had gone yee 7 and the people were determined to rebuild the church building. The first service after the fire was held that night in St. John's Church, Port Perry, and from then on ser- vices were held in the Community Centre until the new church was 65 years! Sixty-five years ago, on February 9, 1921, William and Annie Jane "Jenny" Stearman tied the knot at the bride's parents' home on Quaker Hill. A horse and buggy took the happy couple to Newmarket for their honeymoon, and then to Collingwood via train for a week of visiting relatives. Farming was their business, on the 7th Concession of Scott Township, until they moved to Uxbridge in 1960 and then on to Port Perry Villa in 1977. The couple had much to celebrate last Sunday in a quiet get-together at the Villa ---- including four children, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grand- children. Still romantic after all these years, Mr. Stearman offers his smiling wife a rose. UXBRIDGE MEMORIAL . Today nineteen years later we are proud of our church building and thankful that it stands to the Glory of God. The sympathy of the congregation is extended to Rev. and Mrs. McEn- tyre in the passing of Mrs. McEn- tyre's sister in Brampton last Wednesday evening. Also to the . Fisher family in the death of Mr. Alex Fisher last week. A reception for the family was held in Burns Church after the funeral on Tuesday. The Guild meeting that was to be held last Tuesday night was cancell- ed on account of the bad weather. Also the annual meeting was cancelled and it will be held this Fri- day evening, Feb. 14th, beginning with the pot luck supper at 6:30. The Session members would like to report there is a good response from the plea for reading glasses. There is a box in the foyer of the church for anyone else to contribute. The Ashburn group of the WMS met last Wednesday afternoon at the home of Catherine Humphrey with ten members present. Florence Ashton gave a lovely worship ser- vice to begin the meeting. Lois Daw led in prayer. Ray Death gave an in- teresting account of the annual Presbyterial meeting held in St. An- drews Church, Lindsay, in January. The study part of the meeting because of the absence of Mrs. McEntyre was given by Rev. McEn- tyre, who continued with the current study "the Native people." He had a very interesting and personal message, since when living at his home in Fort Francis, he went to school with and also later taught In- dian children. His experiences made the study more interesting and real to us. The hostess served a lovely lunch and we enjoyed a visit together. On Feb. 26th from 2-5 p.m. the Community Centre is hosting a day of family activites at Kirk Manor Farm. Moms and tots will organize activities such as skating, toboggan- ing, cross country skiing, and snow sculpting. Hot chocolate and cookies wil be served. Get your gear, your family and your friends together and come. Everyone is welcome. The Community Centre is in need of a vacuum cleaner and a summer carpet for the front door - if anyone has either item to donaite, it would be appreciated. Call Gail Gray 655-4625. Mrs. Lois Daw visited last Sunday with her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. James Daw, Mathew and Michael of Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Drew Leaper and son, lan of Mississauga, spent Saturday with their parents, Ted and Rose Heron. Happy Birthday to Leola Fiss of Glen Major last Sunday. Miss Hilda and Miss Walter Hopkins helped her enjoy her birthday. Next Sunday the Boy Scouts and Cubs will parade to Burns Church where they will join in the worship service. How old are you?
