Utica and Area News by Vera Brown Several enquiries have been made as to the condition of Clara Becz and new information received by me is that she is being moved to Grace Hospital for therapy which is need- ed for her rehabilitation. Choir practice Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Sobil home. Church and Sunday School on Sunday will be "held in Epsom Church at 11:15 a.m. There will be a euchre in Utica Hall this Friday at 8 p.m. and on Saturday evening the Hall Board will hold a dance with music by W.J.K. A correction and an apology on the name of the new store owners. It is Keith and Sylvia Mooney and we welcome them to the community. Sunday visitors with the Sutcliffe family were Mrs. Margaret Miller of Mississauga, and Mrs. Donna Brockman and son Bradley of Courtice. : Lorne and Eileen Slute were Fri- day supper guests with Mr. and -Mrs. Kenneth Slute at Greenbank. Sunday guests with the Slutes were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Slute and boys of Robinglade Estates, who were sup- per guests, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shute of Raglan, who visited in the evening. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fielding and girls of Port Perry visited with his parents on Saturday. I'm pleased to report that Mrs. Irene Fielding is feeling much better and hopes to be back to her duties in the near future. I know for sure that the Sunday School and Hall Board have missed her presence very much. Obituary Hazel Hyland Hazel Maude Hyland of 19 George Street in Omemee passed away January 10, 1986. She was in her 77th year. Mrs. Hyland was born in Janet- ville to the late Edwin and Luella Bradburn. She was educated in Janetville Public School and resid- ed in this area for the past 46 years. She was employed by Regal Sta- tionary until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of Trinity United Church in Omemee, a member of the Omemee senior citizens, the Omemee and district Horticultural Society and past Mistress of the Orange Benevolent Association No. 1030. Surviving Mrs. Hyland is her hus- band Byran Frederick Hyland; her children, Isabel (Mrs. Zolton Biglin of Oshawa, Ross of Oshawa, Jean (Mrs. Gary Carr) of Ennismore, Lorraine (Mrs. Del Creed) of Newmarket, Donald of Orono, Glenn of Omemee and Helen (Mrs. Carl Hanshaw) of Omemee. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, great- uncle Dr. Stanley Gilson of Regina, Sask. and great-aunt, Mrs. Hazel Cruss of Toronto. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, January 13, 1986, from Trinity United Church in Omemee at 2 p.m. Rev. E.C. Woodland of Trinty United officiated. Pallbearers were Robert Creed, Gary Creed, Adam Hyland, David Biglin and John Carr, all grandsons of the deceased. Honorary pallbearers were Al Cruess, Leigh Cruess, James Brad- burn, Floyd Parsons, Robert Taylor, Clinton Endicott and Fred Hooton. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, February 11, 1986 -- 35 James Richard Clifton Gibson passed away suddenly at Uxbridge Cottage Hospital on Friday, January 24th, 1988 in his 78th year, being a patient there for a month. He was born May 29th, 1908 to the late Elizabeth * ckney and Thomas Gibson in Reach Township. In the thirties he was hired by um Brown of Greenbank as a truck ver. On August 8th, 1936 he married - Florence Janet Mabel Bice with the Rev. Joseph Deriny as the officiating minister. For a while after mar- riage they resided in Uxbridge Town, then a short while on the ninth concession of Reach and final- ly, they purchased some land on Durham Road 23 off Regional Road 8 then known as Strationville Cor- ners and there he assembled a small house which was the residence till time of death. In the forties he purchased a gravel truck and gravel pit in Ux- bridge Township from which he sold and delivered many yards of gravel for the surrounding territory. During his early years he owned a circular saw driven by a car motor and buzzed away many cords of - wood for his neighbours, besides selling wood of his own. At one time he owned a coupe car with a rum- ble seat which was quite a novelty in those days and an enjoyment for those who had the opportunity of riding in it. These are a few things he was in- : volved in during his lifetime. His wife passed away on July 1st, 1964 following an illness of 15 years which left him a very lonley man, During the seventies he sold his gravel pit and retired. He leaves to mourn his loss two sisters, Ruth and Lucille, and their husband's Howard Ashton and Lorne Wagner. Three sisters-in-laws, Agnes Linton, Iva Bice and Hazel Bryant and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by four brothers-in-law Ross Linton, Norman Bice, Walter Bryant and Harvey Bice. : Funeral services was held on Monday, January 17th at 2 p.m. at the Low and Low Funeral Home, Uxbridge with the Rev. Edith McManiman in charge. Interment to be at the Hillman Cemetery, Utica in the spring. Obituary Barbara Elizabeth Phair of R.R.2, Seagrave, Ontario, died October 13, 1985 at Port Perry Community Memorial Hospital in her 53rd year. Barbara was born May 11, 1933 at Uxbridge, Ontario, the eldest child of Fred and Aileen Dobson and grew up on her parents' farm at Bethesda, 9th Concession Scugog (Reach) Township. On October 1, 1955, she married Wilmot Phair, and they had two sons, Grant and Bruce, both of R.R.2 Seagrave. Barbara attended S.S.No.10 Bethesda Elementary School, both ~ Uxbridge and Port Perry Secondary Schools, and Toronto Normal School. In the fall of 1952 she began her teaching career with five years at North Simcoe Elementary School, Oshawa, followed by teaching time at Brooklin, Epsom, Greenbank, Prince Albert and R.H. Cornish, Port Perry, totalling twenty-three and one-half years in all. During the last seven years of teaching, Bar- bara taught the T.M.R. pupils at R.H. Cornish, a'very special part of her career. Along with her teaching and home life, Barbara enjoyed, and was, an enthusiastic church and communi- ty worker, being active as a U.C.W. member and Sunday School teacher at Greenbank United, and attending Uxbridge Baptist Church in latter years. She was a 4-H and Junior Farmer's member and president in her youth years, and for several . years, was active in the Scugog Historical Society and Museum work in Port Perry. Barbara is survived by her hus- band Wilmot, sons Grant and Bruce, her mother Aileen Dobson, sister Mary Jean and Glen Till and fami- ly, brother Hugh Dobson and fami- ly, and sister-in-law Doris and Ivan Rennie and family. The funeral service was held at Greenbank United Church on Wednesday, October 16, 1985 with Rev. David Shepherd, Greenbank, and Pastor Philip Brown of Ux- bridge Baptist Church, sharing the service.
