Those are real car Lishman sculpture arrives ow in Vancouver for Expo '86 iil "Transcending the Traffic, " an 86 foot high sculpture depicting traf- fic through the ages, has arrived at - the Expo '86 site in Vancouver. The sculpture is the work of Scugog Township's best known ar- tist, Bill Lishman, who has crafted some weird and wonderful things at his workshop studio at Purple Hill, just south of Port Perry. "Bill just returned from.the Expo '86 site where he spent two weeks supervising the assembly of his latest work which made the cross- Canada journey in pieces on two flat-bed trucks. From the time Expo '86 opens in May to the close of the World's Fair in October, millions of people will N ; have viewed the latest creation from the fertile imagination of Mr. Lishman. "Transcending the Traffic" is a 10 ton conical shaped tower some 85 feet in the air around which spirals the history of man and movement, starting with a cluster of cars at the bottom, then car parts, then figures on horseback, bicycles and finally walking and running. There is a total of 55 cars and figures in the spiral. ¥ "Officials at Expo were very pleased when they saw it," Bill told the Star last week. While Bill has made headlines in the past with such works as an ex- act replica of a lunar module and a parts that have been painted and welded together as part of the 85 foot high work. 30 foot stainless steel salmon, '""Traf- fic' is the biggest project undertaken. The estimated cost is about $300,000. Four welder-sculptors and two painters worked on it for him, not to mention a purchasing agent, administrator and comptroller. © "Transcending the Traffic' will be the centre-piece at the land transportation plaza at Expo '86. Expo is leasing the work from Bill with an option to buy once the Fair - is over late this fall. As for his next project? We're almost afraid to ask, but we'll try to keep you posted.
