Snowarama organizers pray for cold weather The annual Port Perry Snowarama for Easter Seals will be held this coming Sunday (Feb. 2) as planned, if the snow conditions don't deteriorate any more than they have. Dave Ballingall, president of the Central Ontario Regional Snowmobile Association and the man responsible for the 100 km. Snowarama course told the Star Monday morning the event "will go 'Galloping hydro lines cause blackout The power failure January 20 that knocked out hydro service in Port Perry and Scugog Island was caus- ed by "galloping" high voltage lines along the Highway 7A causeway. A combination of ice on the lines plus a very strong north wind caus- ed the wires to move up and down as much as eight feet at times. Larry Mabley, manager of the Scugog Hydro Commission said later he's "never seen anything quite like it" in his more than 30 years as a hydro worker. "I thought for a moment the whole line might come down." A spokesman for the Ontario 'Hydro office in Bowmanville told the Star the "galloping"' affect caus- ed a 44,000 volt line to contact with -a wire carrying 48,000 volts, and that caused the trouble. Conductors on Charge driver One of the drivers involved in a three car accident January 17 on Queen Street in Port Perry has been charged by Durham Police. The accident, just before noon, touched off a spectacular fire that destroyed two of the cars involved. There were no serious injuries to any of the occupants of the three cars. i A report in last week's Port Perry Star said that a car driven by John Dunn, 17, hit the rear of another car that was stopped on Queen Street to make a left turn. The Dunn vehicle was also stopped and was hit from behind by a car driven by Jeffrey Wray, 18, of Blackstock. Durham Police have charged Wray with following too close. Police estimate damage in the ac- cident at about $8,000. Correction The Star regrets an error that oc- curred in an advertisement for H & R Block in the January 21, 1986 issue of the paper. The paragraph in question should have read "If you qualify, you can get an expertly prepared tax return' free-of-charge plus 85 percent or more of your refund, usually within two working days or less." Power had to be switched to isolate this problem area and that turned the lights out in the north side of Port Perry for about an hour, and for three hours on the south side. Scugog Island was also without power through the afternoon, along with other customers in rural areas. The Hydro spokesman said that aside from the conductors along the causeway, the high winds and ice caused no other damage to the system. as planned this Sunday." But he's hoping for a helping hand from Mother Nature in the form of several inches of new snow and below freezing temperatures bet- ween now and Sunday morning. If the conditions get no worse by Sunday, Mr. Ballingall said the course will have to take in more of Lake Scugog, rather than the trails: "We've had to do this in the past, and there's no reason why we can't do it again this year, as long as it stays cold," he said. The worst thing that could happen between now and February 2 is several days of above freezing temperatures. Mr. Ballingall said he'll be mak- ing a thorough check along the course this Saturday to see what kind of shape it's in. If the course conditions seriously deteriorate this week, the Snowarama will be rescheduled for February 9. Organizers for this year's Port Perry Snowarama have set a target (Turn to page 6) .
