They put on their skies down at Trillium Valley and enjoyed an evening of cross country skiing. The only thing that got a bit damp was the place one sits down. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lechanch of Bowmanville were Tuesday January 21 dinner guests with their old friends, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brooks on Simcoe Street. Tim Bouwmeesters from over on Mary Street returned home on January 9 from a 4 month tour of Holland, Belgium, Dover, London (where he was joined by 2 friends) and they all went on to Scotland, Wales - back to Dover, France, Spain, Marocco, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia, Austria, Germany and back to Holland to fly home. Starting from a block of bass- wood, the carver cuts out the rough shape on a band saw, then starts to fashion the bird using a draw knife. Rasps, chisels and shavers are us- ed for the fine detail and some carvers use an electric Foredum Tool. The intricate patterns on feathers are burned into the wood and then the bird is painted to make it as life- like as possible. While Guy, Frank and Charlie look on bird carving strictly as an enjoyable hobby, there are profes- sionals working in Canada and the United States who command a big dollar for their art, sometimes as high as $50,000 for a single carving. And prices of $1500 and up are not uncommon for smaller birds. Hot- ly contested world championships are held each year in the States which attract thousands of spectators. But for most carvers, it's just a hobby, a great way to relax. Guy, Charlie and Frank have one word of warning for anyone who might be in- terested. If you try it and like it, you could be hooked.
