Mayor states think tank was Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor says a two-day "think tank" for Regional resort in Haliburton was '"'well worth the money spent." "It was one of the best sessions of this kind that I've ever attended. The discussions were very frank and open. People were speaking their minds and there was none of the grand-standing that sometimes takes place at (Regional) council meetings," Mayor Taylor said in an interview last Friday. Mayor Taylor, and Scugog Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm, along with 25 other coun- cillors and a dozen senior Durham staff members attended the two days of meetings last Wednesday and Thursday at the Pinestone Inn near Haliburton. "Durham Region picked up the tab for the meetings which amounted to about $80 per person for one night's lodging and meals. The fact that tax-payers were paying the bill and the fact that the meetings were held outside Durham created something of a controversy last week with ex- tensive press coverage in two Oshawa newspapers. "At least two Regional councillors (John Aker and Cy Elsey) from Oshawa decided not to attend the meetings because of the cost. But Mayor Taylor said the total tab, estimated at $3200 was com- parable to what it would have cost to hold the meetings somewhere in Durham. And he added the fact the session was held away from home had its advantages. There were no interruptions or phone calls. Coun- cillors were not being called out to tend to other business he said. Those who attended paid their own bar bill, he said. Mayor Taylor said there was one three-hour meeting last Wednesday evening, followed by six hours of meetings on Thursday. topics that are affecting Durham Region such as garbage disposal, water and sewer services, industrial development and long range plann- ing, he said. And noting that there are nine new councillors (as of the elections last November) the meetings were an excellent way for them to get some insights and education into the inner workings of the Region, especially the budget process and the cost of programs. The Pinestone meeting was set up by Durham chairman Gary Her- rema who said he regretted the fact that a couple of councillors decided to boycott the affair. But he too said the meetings were very productive. Mayor Taylor said if "we (coun- cil) was doing this kind of thing every month or so, I would draw the line and protest, but the one time was very worthwhile." Regional councillor Lawrence Malcolm could not be reached last Friday for his comments on the meetings. councillors and staff at a well known CLEARANCE ITEMS -- WEEK 3 -- WHITE STORM WINDOWS 1 - approx. 29"x60" - reg. 730, -- 3 0. 00 - approx. 29" x 64" - reg. 73. ...........
