20 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, January 7, 1986 Sports New Years Day game attracts large crowd at Scugog Arena Eagles in top form to defeat Sweden 11-0 by John B. McClelland The Port Perry Midget Eagles put on a near flawless display of fun- damental hockey as they romped to an 11-0 white-wash over a visiting - team from Haninge, Sweden, at the Scugog Arena, New Years Day. Mr. and Mrs. Grant Menzies, sponsors of the Port Perry Midget Eagles peformed the - ceremonial opening face-off for a New Years Day match between the Eagles and a team from Han- ~inge, Sweden. Port Perry players put on a fine The Eagles, sponsored by Grant Menzies Motors, used speed, pin- point passing and some good old fashioned shoulder checks as they totally dominated the visitors from buzzer.to buzzer. : A near sell-out crowd at the Scugog Arena watched the Eagles take command of the game early in the first period as they built a 7-0 lead, then more or less coasted through the final two frames. The Haninge club, from a suburb of Stockholm, is on a tour of display of passing, skating and checking to com- pletely dominate the visitors 11-0 at the Scugog Arena. Our last goal was by Warren Geer assisted by Brad Menzies. Well done guys and good luck on your next game. Have a Happy New Year southern Ontario and is being hosted by the Pickering Minor Hockey Associatiion. The Eagle coaching staff of Doug Scott, Hillis Wilbur and Glen McCoy had been expecting a much tougher game. The Haninge team earlier had defeated Little Britain 5-4, the same squad the Eagles had dumped 3-1. Doug Scott was at the Little Bri- tain game and said the Swedes played a very physical brand of - hockey. : As the game got underway, it was apparent the Eagle strategy was to use the shoulder and hip check to knock the Swedes off the puck at every opportunity, especially deep in the Swedish zone. The game was just two minutes old when John Harman opened the scoring as he converted a centering pass from behind the Swedish net and quickly put it past netminder Frederick Osund. Dave Culbert and Steve Durham drew the assists. A couple of minutes later as the Eagles were on the power play, Dave Burnett fed a nice pass to cap- tain Craig Menzies to make it 2-0. The flood-gates opened at the mid- point in the period as Brad Menzies found the range from the slot, and a minute later, Scott Burke, Rob Baker and Derek D xter passed the puck around in the Swedish zone - with Burke finishing off the play. Dave Burnett made it 5-0 as he "took his time on a big rebound and calmy flipped the puck upstairs, then . Harman, Cuthbert and Durham put on a nifty passing display with Harman slapping the disc in from the side of the net. The final goal of the first period came with just one second left as Rob Baker took passes from Burnett and Burke and easily scored from in front. - Dave Cuthbert scored the only goal of the middle frame on a set up from Chris Cookman and Lee Wilbur as the Swedish goalie Osund seemed to settle down and made some fine stops. At the other end of the rink, Eagle netminder John Moore, who hardly had a shot his way in the first period, was forced to make several stops as the Eagles were killing a double minor penal- ty. It was the only sustained pressure the Swedes could manage throughout the game. Early in the third, Craig Menzies teamed up with Greg Warriner on a nice two on one play with Warriner sliding the pass through the goal- mouth for the captain. Two minutes later, Dave Burnett was allowed to walk in un-touched from the blue line and he drilled a rising shot from 15 out. The final marker of the game came with 2:34 left as Rob Baker was in alone and scored on a nice deke. There were 15 minor penalties called in the game, seven to the visitors and eight to the Eagles. On several occasions the Port Perry players showed a lot of self-control as they skated away from flagrant high-sticking and slashing infrac- tions handed out by frustrated Swedish players. The Eagles had five Bantams in the line-up for this game: Brad Traves, Brad Menzies, Greg Stapleton, Warren Geer and Steve Connors. In the third period, Bill Eade took over the goal-tending chores, but didn't have much work to do. Without taking anything away from the effort by the Port Perry Eagles, who probably could have scored 20 goals, the Swedish players seemed tired and listless during the game and several were forced to leave the ice after taking hard body checks from the Eagle players. Prior to the opening face-off, players from both teams were in- troduced to the fans at the Scugog Arena, and there was the traditional exchange of small gifts by the two teams. Juniors lose 3-2 On Sunday, January 5 the Sport- sland Juniors travelled to Ajax and lost a close game by the score of 3-2. The game started off with Ajax getting the first goal. Port Perry's first goal was scored by Sherry Har- ris unassisted to make the score 1-1. Just 24 seconds later Kelly Calloway slipped the second goal for Port behind the Ajax goalie also unassisted to make the score 2-1.in favour of Port. Ajax came back to make the score 2-2 at the end of the first period. In the second period both teams were working hard trying to keep the ring out of the nets. But with just 4:00 minutes left in the game Ajax came up with the last goal of the game to make the final score 3-2 for Ajax. Thanks to our two goalies Kerri Allen who played well in the first period and to Terry Childs who played well in the second period. The Port Perry Juniors and Petites are hosting a tournament Saturday, January 11 at Port Perry Arena. The Juniors first game is Saturday, January 11 at 9:00 a.m. No trouble for the Petites On Saturday, January 4, the Bruton's IDA Petites travelled to Oakwood to meet the Mariposa team and were successful in bring- ing home a 9-5 victory. Port dominated throughout the game even with only 9 girls. Scoring for Port was handled by Denna Lover- ing with 7 goals, Amy Parliament 2 goals, 1 assist; Christina Hicken, Kim Poppleton and Valarie Payne 1 assist each.
