Large crowds attended the many exhibits and events at the fair. A twenty year old Uxbridge youth who was caught breaking into a Port Perry gas station in June has been sentenced to two years in prison. Thirteen people from the Myrtle area were forced to take the series of anti-rabies shots after they were in contact with two race horses which contacted the disease. Enrolments in both Port Perry High School and R.H. Cornish have increased significantly on the first day of school as 1070 registered at Cornish and 1027 at the High School. In all, over 3000 students started the new term in the township schools. Council unanimously rejected a request from the Durham School Board asking for the Catholic School funding extension issue to be plac- ed on the ballot in the form of a referendum asking if the voters are in favour of the issue. Scugog Regional councillor, Lawrence Malcolm has announced that he will be seeking re-election in the November 12 election. The Big Sister organization of Scugog and Uxbridge received a $1500 shot in the arm, thanks to the efforts of the many who took part in the local Bowl-a-thon at Centenmal Lanes Ward II councillor Jack Cottrell has announced he will not seek re- election to Scugog Council this November, leaving the position up for grabs. OCTOBER Much of Port Perry was without hydro power Monday morning following a shut-down of the Caleb Street sub-station for maintenance work. The commercial area of the community was without power from about 9:00 a.m. until noon. The Port Perry Star introduced its new five column format for the paper. The change from 7 columns was part of a Canada-wide effort to standardize column widths of all newspapers. The value of building permits in Scugog Township shows that over $9 million in permits have been issued until the end of August. This is up over $2 million from a year earlier. It was announced that construc- tion of a new municipally-owned marina on the Port Perry water- front could get underway as early as two weeks, with completion by the end of April 1986. Scugog Council has agreed with parents from Prince Albert that a crossing guard is needed in front of the school because of the dangerous situation in that location. Paul Milligan took over the posi- tion of building inspector and by-law enforcement officer after being chosen from a large number of ap- plicants. The 34 year old carpenter lives in Prince Albert with his wife and one child. The latest report from Environ- ment Ontario shows that Lake Scugog fish continue to be the most contaminant-free in all the province. There are 24 candidates seeking election in Scugog Township on November 12 and the number of eligible voters number 12,597 -- up by about 500 from the last municipal election three years ago. Doug Olliffe of Port Perry, a can- didate for Mayor, has withdrawn his name from the mayorality race just two hours before the deadline. After managing the Ted E. NOVEMBER Hallowe'en was marred again this year when vandals entered the Pine Grove Cemetery and toppled 28 headstones. Several were damaged beyond repair. In a tragic fire, a 12 year old Scugog youth lost his life after the fire raced through a steel-clad barn on the farm of his parents. A break-in at the House of Howard netted thieves over $5,000 in VCR's and stereos sometime during the night. Port Perry Pet Shop and Hank's Pastries were also broken into with about $70 in cash taken from Hank's. Students at Port Perry High School are taking a stand against impaired driving after losing several of their friends to alcohol- related accidents this past year. They will set-up a branch of SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) and hold a public meeting. Mayor Jerry Taylor was return- ed as Mayor for his third term defeating challenger John Wolters by 865 votes in a hard fought battle. Others elected to office were: ~ Lawrence Malcolm, Harvey Graham, Howard Hall, Yvonne Christie, Don Cochrane and Neil McLaughlin. In the race for the school board, trustee Stuart McEntyre was defeated and Joyce Kelly of Blackstock along with Debbie Tred- way will now represent Scugog at the Board of Education. Debbie Tredway narrowly defeated Bobbie Drew by six votes to earn her seat. Port Perry gained national publicity when 'Ripley's Believe It Or Not" featured last summer's 7 foot Pancake Flip in one of its' weekly columns. The feature is syn- dicated around the world and was seen locally in Monday's Toronto Star. DECEMBER Scugog Council have been asked for a re-count of the votes cast in the recent Board of Education election in the public interest. Bobbie Drew of Port Perry made the request at the first regular meeting of council. Council decided *'no" to the request. Jennifer Geer of Port Perry is one of 15 young people from across On- tario to be honoured as a Junior Citizen of the Year at the February Convention of the Ontario Com- munity Newspaper Association.
