Funeral home proposal gets a green light (From page 17) munity could be without this essen- tial service. Strong concerns about the propos- ed new funeral home have been ex- pressed to council by Harold Wagg, owner of the McDermott-Panabaker Funeral Home on Perry Street, on the grounds the community is not Minor thefts Durham Regional Police say there has been a series of minor thefts and break-ins over the past week in Scugog Township. During the night of December 13-14, a total of 27 letter boxes at Port Perry Post Office were pried open. It's not known exactly what mail Parked vehicles block large enough to economically sup- port two homes. Ward 1 councillor Yvonne Christie received support from councillors Harvey Graham and Neil McLaughlin when she stated that council must base its decision (to change the by-law) strictly on whether it is good land use planning, was taken as a result of the thefts. There were pieces of mail left in some of the open boxes. The lobby area of the Post Office with access to mail boxes remains open after business hours so residents can pick up their mail. Police say a screw driver was like- ly used to force open the boxes. snow removal teams Ward 1 councillor Yvonne Christie says the Township should crack down hard on anyone who leaves a parked vehicle on the side of the road where it interferes with snow removal. "They should get a warning once, but then the cars should be hauled off to the compound. It costs too much money when these cars in- terfere with snow removal," said councillor Christie at the Monday meeting of Township council. She made her remarks after Works superintendent Ronn Mac- Donald told council that on one oc- casion recently, Township snow plow operators counted 89 vehicles which interfered with snow removal, and a further 100 cars on Ashburn (From page 31) day morning with fourteen beautiful poinsettias, beautifully arranged at the front of the church and a lovely arrangement in the windows and on the communion table. He said vehicles parked along the roadside are a particular nuisance in the downtown core when crews are doing a general clean-up to haul away piles of snow. "It costs $400 an hour (during general clean-up) and we just can't afford to wait very long for someone to move a parked vehicle," he said. The Township policy when a car is hindering snow removal is to con- tact the owner and ask that it be moved. Repeat offenders are issued a $10 ticket, and the Township has the authority to also ask Durham Police to have the vehicle towed to the police compound in Manchester. Getting a vehicle out of the com- pound can cost about $30, plus the $10 ticket. news were read by Bill Burgess and Florence Ashton and the Jr. and Sr. choir sang "The Echo Carol." "We have to deal with a request for a zoning change. We can't make a judgement on whether this (new) business 1s needed," said Mrs. Christie. Ron Deeth of Port Perry, who owns the land where the proposed new funeral home would be located, said the owners are planning to con- struct a 6000 square foot building with parking for 75 cars. He said the cost of the building would be in the $425,000 range. A separate parcel of the land fron- ting on the Regional Road is propos- ed for a new ambulance garage. The land is presently zoned residential. If the zoning change is finally approved, council will stipulate that it would be a funeral home only, and would not permit any other kind of commercial development. During his presentation to coun- cil Monday afternoon, Mr. Deeth pointed out that if owners of the pro- posed new home could find a suitable piece of property with a general commercial zoning, they would not need council's approval to put up a new building and open a business. A plan of the site shows the funeral home facing Regional Road 8, just east of Carlan Drive. There would be two separate driveways for exits and entering, and parking for cars would be to the rear of the building.
