McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks could do nothing wrong and the Port Hope Panthers could do little right Sun- day night at the Scugog Arena. When the final buzzer sounded, the score board looked more like a football game as the MoJacks whip- ped the injury-riddled Panthers 15-2. The victory gave the MoJacks 15 points for the season, one ahead of the Panthers, but one behind the Lindsay Muskies who caught fire over the weekend and pinned two straight losses on the Uxbridge Bruins For the MoJacks, the game Sun- day night was pretty much decided Close but not quite Midget II's participated in the Pickering B-Team Tournament this past weekend Placing second to Pickering Village in the Consolation Finals, the team put forth an ex: cellent effort Game 1 against Orono saw Port Perry lose 7-3 with 2 goals by Karl Durham and 1 by Willie Edwards In the second game Port Perry stepped ahead of Markham in over: time with goals by Wille Edwards. MoJcks added four more in the se- cond period and another four in the final frame. The Panthers manag- ed to beat Ken Harman in the se- cond and again in the third period. Harman was actually busier in the MoJack net than the score might indicate and he was severely tested on more than one occasion, facing 29 shots throughout the game. The MolJacks drilled 42 shots at the Pan- ther net Captain Brian Nicholson con- tinued his blistering scoring pace with five goals and a couple of assists He now has 39 goals for the season after 17 games and it looks almost certain that he'll hit the 50-goal plateau with ease. Linemate Andy Sutch also had a big night on the x score-sheet with two goals and four assists, and Jeff Johnstone picked up two assists Left winger Paul Butterworth turned in a fine game as he clicked for three goals and two assists Linemate Chris Nicholson helped out with three assists and one goal The trio of Butterworth, Chris Nicholson and Jeff Duncan continue to perform well for the MoJacks with their speed and tough fore- checking, and they are <* rting to get their share of goals as weil Dun: can notched a goal and an assist in the 15-2 blow out Rounding out the scoring for the MolJacks was Brian Hendricks, Rob Nicholson and with a pair, and Rob Sedore Hendricks and Sedore were team ed together on a line with either Jon Campbell or Dean Smith and they were moving the puck around pret: ty well to create some good scoring chances. Nicholson now has 3 9 so far this season. On Sunday night, he mesmerized the Panther goalies with his patented slap shot. (See story for MoJacks win 15-2 Nicholson nets five For the Panthers, who had several players out of the line-up, Rick Edwards and Shawn Shalla scored the goals. After going through a dismal month of November in which they lost seven games, the MoJacks look like they are getting back on track with three victories in their last four outings. And in those four games they have turned the red light 36 times, while giving up 20 goals. They have given up just six goals in the last two games as the team 1s play- ing solid defensive hockey. MoJacks went on the road Mon- day night (December 16) for a game in Cobourg against the Cougars, and this coming weekend, they have an important home and home series against the Uxbridge Bruins, a team that has given the MoJacks trouble this year On Friday night, MoJacks will travel to Uxbridge, and. the two teams will meet again Sunday night at the Scugog Arena This will be the annual Port Perry Junior C Christmas night with special draws and gifts for the children, The guest of honour will be Saint Nick and it should be a fun evening for the whole family Faceoffis7 30P M If the MoJacks can sweep four points from the Bruins, who have been struggling lately, they wouldy move well up in the standings and get set for a run at Cobourg and Bowmanville for the top two places In other Junior C action over the weekend, the Muskies defeated Ux- bridge by scores of 6-3 and 76 Bowmanville dumped the Little Bn- tain Merchants 9-3 The annual Junior C all-star game will be played in Bowrhanville on December 26 The MoJacks reps on the team will be Brian Nicholson and defenseman Rob Nicholson Eagles flying by Hillis Wilbur On Sunday, December 15 the Grant Menzies Eagles were involv- ed in a tournament in Campbellford and won the championship in a close '4 to 3 victory over Newcastle. In the first game the Eagles played Stirling and won 7 to 4. Scor- ing for Port with another of his big games, was the big guy Dave Burnett with 4 goals and an assist, with Steve Durham, Derek Dexter and Greg Warriner getting the other goals. Picking up assists were Greg Warriner with 3; Craig Menzies 3, Campellford John Harman 2, Chris Lane, Dave Culbert, Chris Cookman, and Lee Wilbur adding singles. In the second game they played Madoc and won 4 to 2. Scoring for the Eagles were Warren Geer assisted by Brad Menzies and Dave Culbert; Derek Dexter assisted by Chris Cookman; Dave Burnett assisted by Craig Menzies and Greg Warriner, and John Harman assisted by Lee Wilbur. (Turn page 25) Winger Paul Butterworth was in high gear for the MoJacks Sunday night in the 15-2 romp over Port Hope. He displayed some great moves and puck-handling ability, and found the range for three goals and a pair of assists. The line of Butterworth, Chris Nicholson and Jeff Duncan has been playing some fine hockey in recent games. Curling Corner by Scott Howey Last Monday, December 9, the B side final game of the O.C A. Mixed Zone Competition was held at the Curling Club. Brian Sud- dard of the Oshawa Curling Club defeated Doug Hedger of York to advance to the Regionals along with Dave Lawes, the A side winner This past weekend December 14 and 15, the teams of Steve Foster, Ron Parish, Don Beaton and Scott Howey, lan Griffen, Dave Roth, and Ken Jeffrey competed in the Labatt Tankard Zone Level held at the Oshawa Curling Club. Foster defeated Brotherhood of Whitby in the first round then went on to down Meckling of Union- ville Saturday afternoon. On Sunday Foster lost in an extra end to Bullock of Richmond Hill in the A side Semi-final. He then vot a bye in the B side quarter final but was eliminated by Gary Grant of Ux- bridge. Howey beat Crawford of Onnandale in his first round zone but was dropped to the B side Saturday afternogn by Gillette of the Oshawa Golf Club On Sunday morning Howey defeated Bakonge of Richmond Hill Howey was forced out Sunday afternoon also by Gary Grant in a game that came down to the final shot Congratulations to both Port Perry teams for their efforts Stu Bennett of the Whitby Curling Club won the A side by defeating Clark Bullock of Richmond Hill The B side Semi-Final zone on Monday night at 8:30 is between Bob Tur cotte of the Oshawa Curling Club and Gary Grant, the winner meets Bullock in the B side final on Tuesday night at 8 30 In other curling action it 1s reported that Ed Wernich of Toronto was eliminated two games straight in zone play in Toronto League playoffs are taking place this week at the club This brings an end to the first schedule of curling.
