26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, December 10, 1985 Oshawa curlers win mixed OCA first round on, 4 & Hg i The David Lawes rink from Oshawa Downtown Curling Club took the A championship in the first round of the O.C.A. mixed playdowns held over the weekend in Port Perry. Dave's teammates are his sister, Andrea, Mike Trudeau and Mary Shannon. They won four games, including an 8-3 victory over Brian Suddard in the final. Utica takes aim at goals Utica - & Emmersons - 0 With the pace Utica's hitting they may break the league record of 100 goals scored in a season as they have now netted 63 after 11 games The first period ended 3-0 on goals by Chester Down, Aldon Smith and Kevin Ibbittson Bill Down, Mike Mitchell and Chester added the assists Bill Down started off the second on an unassisted effort to make the tally 40 Aldon Smith then hit for this second of the game with Mit chell adding his second assist Ken Fraser made 1t 6-0 with the assist going to Murray Down Down then scored one of his own with brother Chester getting the assist Chester got his second goal. and third point of the affair with Aldon Smith get ting the assist for his fourth point Don Card seems to make getting shut outs a habit as he picked up number 7 of the season Oddfellows - 5 B&l. - 2 Oddfellows struck for all 5 of their goals in the opening frame building up a 3-0 lead before B &L. got onthe board One of the hottest twosome in the league hit for a couple as Danny McKee aided Bill Bridge for two goals Steve Robinson from Phil Robinson got the other goal for the lead B&L. then got their first goal off the broom of Eric Kristensen unassisted Before the period ended Phil Robinson unassisted, and Bran record Robinson from Bridge staked Odd- fellows to a 51 lead The final goal in this one went to Norm DeJong unaided Goreski's - 3 Beacock's - 0 Second place was the major issue between these two teams and that's how it was played throughout most of it as the first period went scoreless Early in the second. while on the power play, Danny Taylor on a solo effort started the ball rolling There was no further scoring for some time until with 3 05 to play. Bill St John shot in a rebound from the broom of Taylor Forty seconds later Bruce Woodrow tip ped in a Dave Dickson shot for the final marker by Scott Howey There was a lot of activity at the Curling Club this past weekend as Port Perry hosted the O.C.A. Mix- ed Competition Zone Level There were two Port Perry teams curling in the competition on the weekend. The team of Ralph Fairman, Kelly Evans, Randy Scott and Eve Johnson and Ron Parish's team of Louise Haugen, Don Beaton and Mary Van Shaik. On Friday night fairman defeated Toby Wozniuk of Whitby and Sat. morning defeated Russ Meckling of Unionville. Sun- day morning Brian Suddard of Oshawa dropped Fairman to the B side. Fairman went on to defeat Rick Vesey of the Oshawa Golf Club but was finally eliminated by Doug Hedger of York in the semi-final on Sunday night. Parish lost his first game Sat. morning to Brian Sud- dard but then went on to defeat Woz- niuk and Clemon of Richmond Hill. Meckling downed Parish in an extra end to force him out of the competitjon. Dave Lawes and his team from the Oshawa Curling Club moved through the A side to meet Brian Suddard from the same club in the A side final on Sunday afternoon. Lawes rink emerged as the winners dropping Suddard into the B side final game against Hedger on Mon- day night. The results are as yet nown. Lawes and the B side win- ner will advance to the Regionals being held at the Granite Club in Toronto on December 28 and 29. Ralph and Ron and their teams are to be congratulated for some very fine curling on the weekend and for the part they took in representing Port Perry in the curling commun- nity. The Port Perry Curling Club would also like to thank all fans and spectators who showed their support for curling and making this a suc- cessful event. This weekend December 14-16 the teams of Steve Foster, Ron Parish, Don Beaton, Ken Goreski and Scott Howey, lan Griffen, Dave Roth and Ken Jeffrey are travelling to Oshawa for the Labatt Tankard.
